Darcy whispered, “Mr. Jynn, your heartbeat’s so loud.”

Under the bed, Venus heard them whispering and reminded softly, “No talking. Stay quiet.”

Lucas shouted back, “Okay!”

Darcy gave him an exasperated look.

Lucas awkwardly turned away.

No one knew how long they waited. Suddenly, in the silent villa, came the sound of dripping

water.

Both men froze.

Terrified but curious, they peeked through the cracks.

Black, filthy water was slowly seeping into the room from under the door, rising higher and higher, until it formed into the towering shape of a water ghost. The stench was unbearable.

Lucas had seen it before, so he was somewhat prepared.

But for Darcy, it was his first time. His eyes went wide with panic.

A ghost! An actual ghost!

And a hideous one at that!

His heart pounded wildly.

Lucas noticed and gave him a warning glare, signaling him not to lose his nerve.

Darcy tried to steady himself and kept watching.

The water ghost’s bloated body and swollen limbs twitched as it slowly lifted a pale, thick finger toward Sophia on the bed.

Its hair spread out like seaweed, twisting unnaturally-thick, black strands oozing with filth, covering the room like writhing snakes.

The chandelier light dimmed behind the curtain of hair, the room turning dark and suffocating, as if being swallowed whole.

Under the bed, Venus saw droplets of dirty water dripping down.

Drip! Drip!

She gripped her wooden sword tightly.

When the ghost’s hair slithered toward the bed, she rolled out, swung the sword sideways, and slashed through the strands-cutting into the ghost’s swollen belly.

Splash!

Black water spilled everywhere.

“Ugh!”

The stench hit so hard that both men in the wardrobe gagged and vomited.

Noticing the others, the ghost did not flee. Instead, it smiled grotesquely.

“One substitute … and three snacks,” it sneered. “In my next life, I’ll be rich!”

Venus spat. “Keep dreaming. What, you think the underworld kings are vegetarian?

“Killing people means you pay with your life.

“And from the looks of it, you’ve already taken quite a few.”

This was not a normal water ghost; it had absorbed life to grow stronger.

The ghost’s hollow black eyes fixed hungrily on her. Its fat, slimy tongue slid across its rotting lips.

“A female healer’s flesh must be delicious.

“You really think I’m scared of you? Those last two times, I was just testing you. Now you want to trap me? Heh…

It pointed at Sophia.

“Tonight, her life-and all three of yours-belong to me.”

Lucas shouted through nausea, “What did my daughter ever do to you, you ugly monster?!”

The ghost’s hair thrashed wildly, lunging at him.

“Call me ugly again, and I’ll kill you!”
