But the bastard wouldn't budge. The wife begged for help online, and Hector saw it and stepped in. Can you believe a father would do something like that?"
Bianca listened closely and simply said, "Hell is empty, and all the devils are here. Tell Hector I'll cover whatever it costs. We have to get that little girl out and get her proper treatment."
Even though Mathis was furious at Xanthe's veiled insults, if Bianca wanted to help, he would help.
He desperately needed to score points with his wife.
He immediately pulled out his phone and called Hector. "Xanthe just mentioned a case you're handling. Give me the details."
Hector explained the situation, noting that the cheating husband had local connections. The psych ward was refusing to release the girl, and Hector's team was bogged down trying to navigate the bureaucratic red tape, which would take days.
Mathis demanded the name of the facility. "Why bother with red tape when I can fix this with a single phone call? The girl will be out within the hour. Focus on their divorce proceedings; you're better at stripping assets than I am."
Hector thanked him and hung up.
Mathis immediately dialed Zane, his voice dropping into a lethal command. "I want that girl out of that facility in thirty minutes. Anyone involved in illegally admitting or holding her is to be detained immediately.
Don't let a single one of them go. Tell them I'm personally covering all legal and medical fees."
When he finished barking orders, the three adults at the table stared at him in stunned silence.
Xanthe genuinely wondered if the sun was going to rise in the west tomorrow. Mathis had actually acted like a decent human being.
During dinner, Bianca snapped a picture of her food and sent it to Milo, casually mentioning that Mathis was there.
Milo knew Xanthe and Jax were also present, so he wasn't overly concerned.
As long as they weren't having a candlelit dinner for two, he was fine.
The adults finished their meal, but Aveline was still stubbornly refusing to eat.
Mathis thought she was exactly as headstrong as her mother.
It took the two of them a long time of patient coaxing before their daughter finally finished her dinner.
Afterward, they sat together in the playroom, watching Aveline dive into the ball pit.
After debating with himself, Mathis finally asked, "When exactly did you fall in love with Milo?"
Bianca frowned at him. "Are you sure you want the answer to that?"
Mathis swallowed the lump in his throat. "I want to know where I lost."
*You lost when you stopped treating me like I mattered,* she thought.
"The day I was released from the detention center," she said evenly. "He was there waiting for me. He hugged me, and it felt safe. After that, I just stopped pushing him away."
