Taking a slow sip of her soup, Xanthe elaborated, "It's about that case Hector is working on. The cheating husband had deep roots and serious power in his hometown.

"Hector was facing roadblocks everywhere trying to get the client's daughter back. But Mathis made one phone call, and they released the girl immediately.

"The mistress was completely unhinged. She actually sent her brother and a bunch of thugs to beat up the wife.

"But Mathis apparently predicted it. He had his own guys lying in wait at the hospital, and they beat the mistress and her brother so badly they ended up hospitalized themselves.

"The husband went to visit his mistress, caught a beating too, and now he's in the hospital right next to them.

"Mathis's men warned them that if they called the cops, they'd be trafficked out of the country. Scared the living daylights out of the cheating scumbag and his mistress.

"The wife and the poor little girl are completely safe now.

"Hector said he's already initiated asset protection. The husband was trying to leave her with absolutely nothing. She couldn't even afford legal fees."

Hector was far from cheap.

"I'll cover the fees," Bianca said instantly. "Tell Mr. Goodwin to focus on helping her."

"No need to empty your wallet, Mathis already footed the entire bill," Xanthe smirked. "The wife still can't believe her luck. Hector flat out told her that Mathis did it all for you.

"Anyone who doesn't know the truth would think he's wildly in love with you. Honestly, sometimes I seriously question what Mathis's actual motives are."

Xanthe was the only one who knew exactly how Mathis had treated Bianca during those three years of marriage. Bianca wasn't the type to vent, but when the suffocation became too much to bear, she had confided in her best friend.

Otherwise, she would have completely lost her mind.

Calmly continuing her meal, Bianca replied, "It doesn't matter. I've cut him entirely out of my life.

"The person inflicting the pain can easily turn the page, but the victim is left trapped in the nightmare. You can't just undo psychological trauma with a few grand gestures."

Hearing that resolute answer finally put Xanthe's mind at ease.

Tessa awkwardly shuffled over with her tray, taking a seat at their table. "Ms. Baldwin, could you spill some tea about you and your husband? He seems so obsessed with you."

Bianca paused, swallowed her food, and looked up. "That's all in the past. The only person he loves is himself. I was just his emotional crutch."

Maybe the teenage version of her had been permanently etched into his brain, but loving someone required care and protection, two things he had utterly failed to provide.

Tessa looked profoundly unsatisfied with the lack of juicy gossip.

Bianca had told her to trash the massive bouquet Mathis brought last night, but Tessa had actually dragged it to a local florist and sold it on the cheap.

The flowers were worth over ten grand, and she had pocketed a solid two thousand from the resale.

Earning a free two grand had Tessa practically buzzing with joy.
