"I'm sorry. I was terribly ill back then and misunderstood you, which is why I spoke without thinking."

Mathis felt a wave of sorrow. So every little moment they shared was nothing but a shackle to her.

He truly didn't want to let Bianca go, but her condition forced his hand.

His voice softened even more. "Bianca, I will never stop loving you in this lifetime. It's only because of your condition that I have to step away from you temporarily.

"But promise me you won't throw yourself into another man's arms. Please?"

Bianca wanted to reject him outright, but she feared a harsh refusal would only trigger his possessiveness.

"Fine!" she agreed readily.

Mathis's tone turned pleading. "Then will you have one last meal with me?"

He didn't even understand why he was treading so carefully around her.

Bianca stated she had no time and could only eat at the company cafeteria.

There was no way she wanted to be alone with him in a private dining room, risking God knows what.

Mathis had an obsession with her.

Besides, they were going to see each other again at the Jagger family's banquet on Friday anyway, so she had no idea why he was acting like this was some tearful final parting.

Knowing she wouldn't go out to eat with him alone, Mathis settled for following her to the cafeteria.

Right before they left, he snatched the winged bunny charm hanging from her bag.

Bianca frowned. "Why are you taking my things?"

It was a winged traditional-style bunny wearing an elegant dress, as pink and plump as a ripe peach.

She had gotten it from a mystery box and loved it enough to hook it onto her bag.

"Since you won't be by my side, I want something to remember you by," Mathis said.

Bianca ignored him, figuring she wouldn't get it back anyway, and got up to head to the cafeteria.

The food at Stellaride Computing was quite good—affordable and with a wide variety of dishes.

Mathis had high standards for food, so these options might not meet his approval, but Bianca couldn't care less.

It was his own choice to eat here.

He asked Bianca to get the food for him, asking softly, "Do you still remember what I like to eat?"

Bianca replied coolly, "What do you think?"

Mathis kept his gaze fixed on her. "I think that with your excellent memory, you can recall whatever you want to remember in an instant. Right?"

She answered bluntly, "Then just assume I'm getting old and suffering from early-onset dementia!"

Bianca asked the lady behind the counter to just serve Mathis a random assortment of dishes. Whether he liked them or not was his problem.

The server looked at them with an amused expression. "Ms. Baldwin, is this your husband? He's so handsome!"
