Juno scanned the foyer, her eyes catching faint, muddy scuff marks on the marble floor. "Someone was here. A lot of people."
A maid looked terrified. "Yes, Miss! We don't know what happened. Right after Mr. Corrington left, a whole squad of men kicked the doors in and started tearing the place apart. We... we were terrified, so we hid. Please don't be mad, Mr. Rylan!"
Juno had a stealth earpiece in, keeping a direct line to Morgan.
"Preliminary intel suggests it was Lucia's crew," Morgan reported in her ear. "But they didn't find whatever they were looking for."
Only thugs from Blackwood City would have the audacity to execute a home invasion so recklessly, completely ignoring local laws.
"Clean this up immediately," Juno ordered the staff.
"Yes, right away."
She wanted to head upstairs, change clothes, and head back out to manage the crisis, but Gwendolyn suddenly grabbed her sleeve. She turned around, confused.
"Sweetheart," Gwendolyn said softly. "I'm still really shaken up about tonight. Could you... sleep in my room?"
Juno instinctively shot a look at Harrison. Wasn't it his job to comfort his wife?
She desperately wanted to say no. The situation with her sister's reputation was still a burning fire that needed putting out.
But Gwendolyn's eyes were so resolute, refusing to take no for an answer.
After a brief internal struggle, she finally gave in. "Fine."
After showering, she found herself lying next to Gwendolyn. The strange bed, the unfamiliar person, the foreign scent—everything set her on edge. Under the duvet, her body was as rigid as a plank of wood.
Gwendolyn shifted closer.
Juno instinctively recoiled, scooting toward the edge until she miscalculated and tumbled straight off the mattress onto the floor.
Her expression went dark.
Damn it.
Gwendolyn frantically sat up and hauled her back onto the bed. "Are you just nervous?"
"Perhaps you should sleep with Dad."
Gwendolyn wrapped an arm around her, firmly pressing her back into the pillows. "Absolutely not. You're staying right here."
No matter how she looked at it, the older woman did not seem traumatized in the slightest.
Trapped in her mother's embrace, she was essentially being forced to go to sleep.
"Do you have a statement regarding the recent leaks?"
Flanked by a wall of intimidating private security, she simply raised a hand, and the chaotic room instantly fell dead silent.
Such was the sheer gravity of The Empress.
She leaned toward the microphone, her voice carrying absolute authority. "I am here to clarify one thing."
The reporters scrambled to hit record and poise their pens.
"The allegations against Maia Mercer."
Pens paused mid-air. What was there to clarify?
Even if it was fake, why wait ten years to say anything?
"Maia was my mentor, the person who made me who I am. Years ago, someone orchestrated a smear campaign to destroy her life. Back then, I didn't have the power or the voice to clear her name. But now, those same cowards are trying to drag her through the mud again. This time, I will crush them.
And anyone who participated in slandering my mentor online is about to answer for it directly."
"Are you stating that the rumors of her trading favors for money are entirely fabricated?"
