It seemed he had severely underestimated her.
Juno kicked him hard in the leg. Stumbling backward, he nearly fell.
Using his own momentum against him, Juno slammed him face-first into the sink counter.
A sickening crack echoed as the lower half of his body went numb. The excruciating pain made his face twist in agony.
“Have you ever heard the name Elara Thorne?”
Juno’s voice flowed as casually as if she were discussing the weather.
Mr. Grayson’s mind was entirely blank from the pain. He didn't have the mental capacity to think about some woman named Elara Thorne.
“No!”
Juno held him down, shoving his face directly into the basin and turning on the faucet. “If you can’t remember, I’ll help you jog your memory.”
Mr. Grayson inhaled violently, sucking water straight into his lungs. He choked, feeling like he was drowning on dry land.
“I... I remember!”
Juno shut the water off.
“That celebrity?”
“Years ago, to keep her chained to your side, you ruined her career by starting rumors that she was sleeping around.”
Mr. Grayson gasped for air, vaguely recalling the incident.
“So what?! Isn’t she back now? She’s famous again. It’s not like she lost anything.”
Juno continued, “When she swore she’d rather die than submit to you, you treated her like a mouse. You let her loose, sent your men to track her, and waited for her to be utterly humiliated so you could swoop in and play the hero. You thought that would finally break her into loving you.
But you didn’t account for her running into me.”
Juno’s interference had shattered his sick game. He had been completely unable to get near Elara ever since.
“Because you couldn’t get to Elara, you decided to find a new target. And tonight, you set your sights on me, didn’t you?”
Mr. Grayson’s expression turned utterly venomous. “You’re pretty smart.”
“It’s a shame. You won’t be breathing long enough to touch anyone else.”
Juno released his throat. Before he could react, she drew a dagger from her waist, pinned his hand flat against the marble counter, and drove the blade straight through it.
“Ahhhhh!!!”
Mr. Grayson shrieked hysterically.
The bathroom wasn’t far from the private room. Hearing the blood-curdling screams, Mr. Grayson’s deadbeat friends bolted into the hallway, with Rylan leading the charge.
Juno asked, “When did you get here?”
“Right when you walked into the club.”
This place was a cesspool. Not somewhere she should be.
“The matter you asked me to look into earlier—I have the results,” Chuck said.
Juno nodded. “This isn’t the place to talk. I need to head back to the estate first, but I’ll come find you later.”
If Rylan went home alone, there was no telling what the Corringtons would say.
Chuck grabbed her hand, refusing to let go. His dark eyes deepened, and his tone was laced with clear dissatisfaction. “I’m still not as important as the Corringtons?”
Juno was temporarily at a loss for words.
Eventually, Chuck relented and let her go.
Late that night, after the entire Corrington household had gone to sleep, Juno slipped out of her room and headed to the backyard.
She agilely scaled the perimeter wall. Just as she straddled the top, a gloomy voice drifted up from below. “Let me tell you a story.”
Juno paused, resting one hand on the ledge, and looked down.
Rylan was standing there with his hands behind his back. In the pitch-black night, his teeth gleamed stark white as he gave a tight smile. “There once was a girl who snuck out in the middle of the night, only to be dragged into the woods by seven thugs.”
