Every word was drenched in targeted mockery.
Nobody knew exactly how Rhiannon had gotten into Northbridge. Gwendolyn was stunned that Juno knew the truth.
Melba was too proud to admit her daughter was anything less than perfect. "You're lying! My daughter is exceptional! She earned her spot on her own merits!"
Juno's smile was chilling. "On her own merits? How? With those pathetic test scores that she couldn't even cheat her way through properly?"
Listening at the door, Margie felt like she had just stumbled upon the scoop of the century. "What? They bought her way in? Did you know about this, Gordon?"
Otherwise, why wasn't he surprised at all?
Gordon's expression was grim. "Yeah. Harrison wanted to protect Rhiannon's ego, so he secretly hired people to fake the back-end records. On results day, her scores were completely fabricated, and he paid massive donations to secure her spot at Northbridge."
Honestly, there were so many loopholes that anyone with half a brain could have figured it out, but Rhiannon remained completely oblivious.
"But at that one family dinner, you used Rhiannon's Northbridge status to mock Juno for going to a community college."
Gordon looked ashamed. "It had been so long, I started believing it was real myself."
Margie was speechless.
Melba was struck dumb.
Juno wasn't done. "Margie invested in Genesis Hospital. Growing up, anytime Rhiannon had so much as a papercut, the top medical experts in the entire hospital were put on standby, terrified something might happen to her. What? Didn't Mrs. Talbot's little investigation uncover that?"
Hearing Juno lay it out, Margie increasingly felt like all her years of devotion had been fed to the dogs.
Melba scowled. "Isn't that just what family is supposed to do?"
"Then my heart aches for my mother. So if I slap you across the face right now, would that be the right thing to do, too?"
Was she even qualified to be mad?
Melba circled back to the starting point. "Then why kick my daughter out of the Corrington house?! Was it because you were whispering poison in their ears?"
"Because your daughter committed murder."
Juno stated it with alarming nonchalance. "Your daughter tried to kill Matilda for money."
Even if Rhiannon had tried to hide something so severe, the Talbots could easily uncover it if they looked.
So Juno didn't bother elaborating on the details.
Melba had nothing left to say, but she refused to just let it go. "We will remember your favors. The Talbot family will repay them one by one in the future!..." But as for the slights...
She didn't get to finish. Margie, with her impulsive temper, couldn't take it anymore. She stormed into the room, fiercely overbearing. "We Corringtons don't need your damn repayments! But you assaulted Gwendolyn, and this isn't over! You're not walking out of this house today without answering for it!"
