Her hand slowly slid off the doorknob as she turned back to look at him.
Balfour had just finished his meal and was casually dabbing his mouth with a napkin.
Seeing her silence, he smiled. "You don't seem surprised at all that I know who you really are."
Juno's expression was icy. "Do you know what a security guard told me when I first arrived at the Sloane estate?"
Balfour looked intrigued, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "What?"
Juno mimicked the guard's tone perfectly. "'Recently, Mr. Lytton has been treating you a thousand times better than before.'"
She crossed her arms. "You and Sylvie grew up together and you never felt a thing for her. Then suddenly, you treat me like royalty? It didn't add up."
Juno was naturally suspicious.
She had no intention of wasting time on small talk. "So, the medicine at the base. Real or fake?"
Balfour brushed the question off effortlessly. "Give it to Chuck and see for yourself."
She didn't bother entertaining him any longer and yanked the door open. Outside stood a squad of armed men, the front row pointing their guns directly at her.
As the men advanced into the room, Juno took a step back.
Balfour finally stood up from the sofa, his voice dripping with a languid, intoxicating charm. "Juno, I worked so hard to lure you here. How could I just let you walk away?"
Juno planted her feet, completely unfazed by the dozens of barrels trained on her.
"If this were the old you, maybe you wouldn't be caught in such a passive spot," he mused. "But you're in a new body now. Your physical skills aren't what they used to be."
In her prime, Juno's combat abilities were so terrifying that no one could even get close to her, let alone land a hit.
"You forgot one thing," Juno said coolly. "I'm not fighting alone anymore."
"Oh?"
Balfour kept walking toward her, closing the distance.
Juno raised her hand, forming a finger gun and aiming it right at his chest. Her lips parted slightly.
"Bang."
CRACK!
Two sounds echoed simultaneously. The deafening blast of a real sniper rifle shattered the quiet night, drowning out her voice.
A hole materialized in the window glass, and a bullet ripped cleanly into Balfour's shoulder.
He stumbled, falling hard to his knees.
The armed men instantly swarmed around him, forming a protective shield as they scanned the darkness outside in sheer panic.
Surrounded by his guards, Balfour suddenly let out a low, dark laugh. "So Jett is here too."
Jett was an elite sniper. He had taken down some of the most highly guarded targets in the world.
He never missed.
In a matter of seconds, five or six men had already dropped to the floor.
The guy was a phantom with a trigger.
By the time they arrived at Genesis Hospital, Kian had already administered the drug to Chuck.
He was currently under observation in the ICU.
Juno waited tirelessly in the hallway.
The next day, Chuck finally woke up. After a thorough examination, Kian updated her. "No abnormalities for now. He might fully regain consciousness in the next couple of days."
Having gotten a basic read on his condition, Juno stepped out of the ward. Morgan, who had been waiting outside, immediately approached. "The men watching the Sloane family just reported they've arrived in Kingsland."
"Who?"
Morgan replied, "Field Sloane and Sylvie."
Why would the head of the Sloane family bring his neglected daughter to the Corrington estate?
Obviously, they came specifically because of the kidnapping.
But they weren't there to demand justice for their daughter. They were there to extort concessions from the Corringtons.
She had to head back.
Back at the Corrington estate.
The entire family was gathered in the grand living room.
Harrison and Gwendolyn sat at the head of the room. Opposite them were Field and Sylvie.
Margie and Gordon were seated on the sides, while the three younger siblings sat quietly below them.
