It was as if he had purposely waited for her to agree to the duel before finally walking in to teach.
The Corrington family was as ridiculously overprotective as ever.
When the class ended, the students flooded out of the lecture hall.
Sebastian lingered behind and called out to Juno. "Can you handle this yourself?"
"Yeah."
Sebastian nodded. "If things get out of hand, don't shoulder it alone. Your brother is here for you."
A flicker of warmth brushed past Juno's heart. "Okay."
Just as she stepped out of the building, her phone rang. It was Miles. "Ms. Mercer, the boss went looking for you! He's already at the campus gates."
"Hm?"
Wasn't Chuck supposed to be confined to his hospital bed?
"He woke up suddenly. But the way he looked at me... it wasn't his usual look." Miles stuttered, struggling to explain it. "Those eyes... he looked exactly like he did when he was around fifteen."
Juno's mind instantly jumped to the H315 poison.
Hallucinations.
Chuck might be hallucinating.
Without another word, Juno took off sprinting toward the gates.
Her long hair whipped wildly behind her.
Miles kept talking over the phone. "I know he can't show his real face around Northbridge University right now."
After all, his public identity at the school was just a lowly advisor.
"So I had someone do his makeup to alter some key details."
Juno absorbed every word without breaking her stride.
She ran fast, not stopping for a single second.
Claire had barely stepped out of the classroom before Juno was completely out of sight, entirely unable to keep up.
Juno quickly reached the crowded school gates. She scanned the sea of moving students.
Even in the massive crowd, she spotted Chuck instantly.
Even though his face looked completely different.
Just as she was about to approach, Chuck ran toward her.
Before she could even speak, he yanked her tightly into his arms.
He searched left and right, and when he finally realized he had nothing left to give, a flash of pure frustration crossed his face. He looked at Juno with desperate, exhausted eyes, his voice rasping from dry lips. "I'll get more money by tomorrow. Use this for now. Don't worry about your sister."
Seeing him like this, it finally clicked for Juno. He wasn't just hallucinating; his entire memory had fragmented.
In his mind, he had reverted to the exact moment she had been the most desperate for money.
The moment her sister, Maia Mercer, had met with disaster.
Crucified by the entire internet, Maia had jumped off a building. She had suffered shattered bones across her entire body and had been clinging to life by a thread.
Juno had begged everywhere for help, only to be met with endless humiliation.
Chuck had left the Yates family when he was ten. Over the next five years, Lorcan Yates had sent endless waves of assassins after him.
But Chuck had survived every single attempt, never once bowing his head to the Yates family.
Yet, for her sake, he had thrown himself to his knees and begged Lorcan for help.
Juno closed her eyes tightly, forcing herself back to the present. "Everything is fine now."
Chuck frowned, clearly not believing a word she said.
The antidote Balfour had given them was either fake or incomplete.
She didn't know what the final stages of the H315 poison looked like, but she knew she was entirely out of time.
