He took a step back, his demeanor completely unfazed and professional. "I am acting on official orders to detain her. I have the signed documentation."
Lucia kept the gun leveled at him, her wrist perfectly still. "Do I look like the kind of person who gives a damn about a piece of paper?"
What a joke.
If he took one more step, Lucia would pull the trigger without hesitation.
That level of ruthlessness was a prerequisite for leading the Obsidian Court.
"Even if you kill me today, more will keep coming."
Lucia didn't care in the slightest. "Then I'll kill them all," she said flatly.
Pausing slightly, she declared loudly enough for the families below to hear, "I'd love to see what runs out first—your manpower, or the Obsidian Court's bullets."
Lucia couldn't help but think: if Juno got taken and never woke up, that would be one thing. But if she woke up and found out Lucia had let her be kidnapped, Juno would absolutely end her.
Standing below, Babur couldn't contain his excitement. Holy crap, this woman was so incredibly badass!
Who cared if she was short? Her aura was towering!
When things got serious, she was exactly like Juno!
That was exactly the right thing to say! Who did these thugs think they were, acting so arrogant?
Seeing that the man had no intention of backing down, Lucia asked, "So, are you going to leave or what?"
The man tried to reason with her. "A dead person inexplicably resurrecting in another's body—doesn't that strike you as horrifying? We need to investigate exactly what is happening with Juno."
Lucia refused to entertain him. "Then go to Blackwood City and dig up Juno's grave. Why are you trying to kidnap her here? Wouldn't a corpse be easier to study?"
The man's eye twitched at her logic. He knew very well that the moment he set foot in Blackwood City, the Obsidian Court would tie him to an anchor and throw him into the ocean.
Deciding not to debate the point, he said, "You seem to be ignoring one critical fact, Ms. Corbett. You are currently in Kingsland. Your power base is entirely in Blackwood City."
Distant water couldn't put out a local fire.
That was exactly what Lucia was worried about.
It was true; all her assets were back home.
A wise man knows when to pick his battles.
There was no other option.
The intruders released the Corrington and Jagger family members and executed a crisp, tactical retreat.
Babur sneakily kicked one of them on their way out.
Bastards! How dare they try to take his sister!
As soon as the intruders stepped outside, they realized the property had been entirely surrounded.
A small army of men in sharp suits stood waiting, every single one of them wielding top-tier firearms.
The leader was observant; he instantly recognized the insignia. They were from The Imperium.
He frowned deeply. Just who the hell was Juno Mercer?
Not only did she have the Obsidian Court backing her, but The Imperium was interfering as well.
