Cowering and flinching, the woman looked at everyone like they were terrifying monsters.
The Institute researchers immediately realized they had monumentally screwed up. Chuck stood with his back to the room, so no one could see his face, but his voice was lethally calm. "Detain all of them."
None of them were leaving until the real Juno was back.
The Imperium's men swiftly escorted the panicked medical team out of the room.
As for the woman, now that she was awake, there was no reason to keep her in the lab.
Everyone wore deeply conflicted expressions, entirely unsure of what to do with this stranger occupying their daughter's body.
Gerda was the first to speak up. "I'm not feeling well. I'm going home."
She didn't spare the terrified woman a single glance.
That wasn't her granddaughter.
Margie and Gordon quickly followed her out. "We'll escort you back."
Matilda watched the Corringtons leave so decisively. After a moment of hesitation, she decided to leave the situation to her daughter. Without a word, she gathered the Jagger family and left as well.
In a matter of seconds, the room had mostly emptied out.
Harrison sighed heavily. "Let's just go home for now."
Whatever the truth was, they needed to get back to the estate first.
Chuck didn't say a word, and frankly, no one paid any real attention to the impostor.
The woman acutely felt the massive shift in the room's energy.
Weren't they all so overwhelmingly thrilled to see her awake just moments ago?
But she was entirely too frightened to voice her confusion.
Gwendolyn looked incredibly exhausted. She tried to call her "Juno," but the name felt like ash in her mouth. She knew deep down that the soul residing in that body wasn't her daughter's.
"Let's go. We're heading home."
The woman scrambled off the examination table and hurried after Gwendolyn. As they stepped outside into the bright, sunny afternoon, the warmth settling on her skin finally chased away the lingering chill.
She couldn't understand why the short woman staring at her looked like she wanted to commit murder, or why everyone else was giving her such cold, resentful glares.
What had she done wrong?
Filled with a deep sense of confusion, she climbed into the car.
Lucia watched the convoy of vehicles disappear into the distance. "Make the arrangements. We're heading back to Blackwood City."
Since Juno was gone, there was no reason for her to stay in Kingsland.
For some inexplicable reason, Gwendolyn still believed her real daughter would return. She refused to let this stranger occupy Juno's personal space.
Even if, biologically speaking, they were the same person.
The woman settled into the guest room. It was spotless and beautifully decorated. Sitting on the plush mattress, she realized she had never stayed in a room this luxurious in her entire life.
Babur quietly turned to his older brothers. "This doesn't make sense. You two are way too calm about her waking up."
He remembered perfectly well how panicked they had been when Juno first lost her pulse.
They had looked ready to march into hell and drag her back themselves.
Rylan casually flipped his phone in his hand. "She was always closest to you, yet you couldn't tell the difference the second you saw her?"
Babur was absolutely floored.
What did that mean? That wasn't his sister?
His real sister... was gone?
Babur felt his entire world come crashing down.
Even the household staff realized something was incredibly wrong, but they were smart enough to keep their mouths shut.
As the days slowly passed, the family gradually accepted this new reality.
