Faced with the researchers' sheer disbelief, Kian didn't even blink. "I was panicked because I care about her. It's completely normal that I missed the diagnosis in the heat of the moment."
Logically and emotionally, it was an entirely flawless defense.
Yet none of them bought a single word of it.
As they bickered, Juno reached over with one hand and popped open the metal case sitting beside her.
Inside, securely locked in foam, rows of syringes and vials of every imaginable size gleamed under the lights.
Reflecting a deadly, clinical glare.
The liquid inside each syringe was a different color.
Juno ran her index finger lightly over the glass tubes, the icy chill sinking straight into her skin.
Kian's flawless excuse had effectively gagged the researchers. And since Juno was awake, there was exactly zero chance they were ever getting another blood sample to prove their theories.
The room plunged back into heavy, suffocating silence.
Juno's finger stopped near the middle of the row. She plucked out a specific syringe and held it up to the light.
Her dark eyes flicked down to study the needle.
Every researcher in the room was staring at it, completely paralyzed.
What the hell was she going to do?
Still lounging in her chair, Juno suddenly smiled. "I was a little bored when I first woke up. Anyone want to guess how I passed the time?"
The researchers: How would we know?
Not bothering to wait for an answer, she twirled the syringe playfully in her fingers, the curve of her eyes turning dangerously dark. "I got bored, so I counted exactly how many puncture marks you left on my arms."
The researchers' blood turned to ice. It became horrifyingly clear what was about to happen.
Juno's voice remained a slow, unbothered drawl. "I kept thinking... Out of all those track marks, some were from drawing blood, some were from injecting... whatever this is." She paused. "You guys probably don't know this about me, but I'm an incredibly petty person. Whatever you take from me, I demand back in kind."
"Are we on the same page?"
The syringe buried itself into another researcher's chest. He didn't just collapse; he immediately began convulsing violently on the tiles.
Juno didn't even look at him. With total apathy, she picked up the thickest syringe in the case. She pushed the plunger slightly, sending a few drops of thick, milky-white fluid squirting from the tip.
A cold sweat broke out across everyone's neck.
Juno finally stood up. She stalked forward, step by slow step, like the grim reaper coming to collect.
She stopped directly in front of the senior researcher. Morgan, appearing like a ghost behind the man, kicked the back of his knees. The senior slammed onto the floor with a heavy thud.
Juno crouched in front of him, syringe in hand, her eyes devoid of a single speck of light.
Morgan knew that look entirely too well. It was the look she reserved for the dead.
Juno clamped a hand onto the senior's shoulder, pinning him down as he thrashed. Without a second's hesitation, she drove the needle straight into his vein and slammed the plunger down.
The senior's eyes bulged in utter disbelief as the chemicals flooded his bloodstream.
