The remaining researchers erupted in pure panic. They never actually thought she would cross that line. "Juno, you fucking monster!!!"
Juno released the empty syringe, watching impassively as the senior researcher convulsed and collapsed, completely paralyzed.
Morgan instantly moved in. He delivered a brutal kick to the chest of the screaming man, sending him crashing into the wall. The researcher crumpled to his knees, utterly unable to get back up.
"I'm a monster?" Juno sneered. "Then what the hell does that make you?"
Running highly unethical experiments on a living human being—it seemed the esteemed Research Institute was nothing but a cesspool.
The man gasping on the floor still tried to justify himself. "We did those experiments to save millions of lives!! Who the hell are you to completely erase our sacrifices with a few words?!"
"Bullshit," Juno spat, looking down at him. "I just injected your precious miracle drug into your colleagues and they dropped instantly. Care to explain that?"
"That formula is designed to reanimate the dead!! Of course it's going to have adverse side effects on a living person!!"
Morgan's grip on his cane tightened until his knuckles cracked, a murderous, violent energy radiating off him.
Juno casually raised a hand, silently ordering Morgan to stand down.
"The dead?" Juno stepped closer. "Just because a person is dead, you think you can do whatever the hell you want to their body? The dead deserve this?"
She moved with an overwhelming, innate dominance that crushed the air from the room.
The researcher on his knees couldn't formulate a single argument. As she closed in on him, his heart hammered in sheer terror.
"Don't try to twist the narrative, Ms. Mercer!"
Juno lashed out, driving her boot directly into his throat and pinning him violently against the wall.
Crushing his windpipe beneath her heel, she whispered, "As a courtesy, I'll send you on your way. Consider it an act of charity. Once you're properly dead, then we can inject the rest of that shit into you."
Her heel snapped down. The man went entirely limp, the life leaving his eyes.
Juno calmly pulled her foot back.
A few of them were still conscious. Morgan gave a subtle jerk of his chin. His men stormed into the room, slammed the remaining researchers face-first into the tiles, and efficiently jammed the remaining syringes into their bodies, emptying the vials.
They executed the order with clinical precision. In seconds, not a single researcher was left standing.
"Are they dead?" Juno asked.
Kian crouched down, checked their vitals, and gave a grim nod.
Dead.
The drug had definitively been fatal.
"Ugh..." A thick, coppery sweetness suddenly flooded Juno's throat. Dark blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
Her legs abruptly gave out, collapsing beneath her.
Standing closest, Morgan lunged forward in absolute panic, catching her before she hit the floor and letting her lean her full weight against him.
Chuck carried her out of the room, his voice low and fiercely protective. "You're okay. I've got you."
Kian and Morgan exchanged a desperate look. They needed to immediately call for backup from Blackwood City.
Kian alone wasn't going to be enough to fix this.
The chemical cocktail in her blood was way too complex.
Meanwhile, in Blackwood City.
The entire leadership of the Russell family sat across from Lucia Corbett at a massive dining table groaning with extravagant dishes.
Lucia and a few of her top lieutenants sat completely still, unbothered.
The Russells had initiated this sit-down.
Their sole objective was to officially make peace with the Obsidian Court.
In this world, you avoided making enemies of the Court at all costs.
Lucia didn't touch the food. The Russells, too terrified to eat, had only managed a couple of obligatory bites before giving up.
They hadn't exactly come here for the catering anyway.
Leaning back in her chair, Lucia stared at them, her expression completely flat. "Cut the crap and tell me why you're here."
