The True Heiress: Legend Mode novel Chapter 280

She absolutely despised people who beat around the bush.

And she certainly didn't have the patience to play mind-reader.

Belinda Russell's older brother cleared his throat. "Now that you're running the Obsidian Court, Ms. Corbett, we were hoping to establish a closer relationship. After all, nobody in their right mind wants the Court as an enemy."

The Obsidian Court basically held an absolute monopoly across every major industry.

Going against them was financial suicide.

Since clinging to the Yates family was no longer an option...

...offending the Obsidian Court was entirely out of the question.

Lucia knew how to play the game; the Court couldn't afford to make enemies out of absolutely everyone.

"Mhm," Lucia hummed, barely opening her mouth.

She didn't need to waste words on this.

Seeing her accept the olive branch, the Russells broke out in collective, relieved smiles.

The food they couldn't stomach minutes ago suddenly looked pretty appetizing.

The suffocating tension in the room instantly evaporated.

And because the tension evaporated, some people got way too comfortable.

Belinda Russell looked right at Lucia with her pretty eyes and smirked. "I heard Juno Mercer is dead. Is that true?"

She knew the internal politics of the Obsidian Court were a complete bloodbath.

If there was one thing everyone knew, it was that Lucia and Juno absolutely hated each other.

Now that Juno was out of the picture, Belinda fully intended to suck up to Lucia to secure her family's future.

The second those words left her mouth, Lucia stopped twisting the ring on her finger. Her eyes instantly turned to ice as she slowly looked up at her.

It wasn't just Lucia. Every single lieutenant at the table stopped moving and simultaneously locked a lethal glare onto Belinda.

The air in the room violently compressed.

It was a subtle shift, but anyone with a pulse could feel the sheer, unadulterated danger flooding the room.

Belinda's brother frantically nudged her leg beneath the table, silently begging her to shut up.

Too busy trying to kiss Lucia's ass, Belinda remained completely oblivious. "The Obsidian Court was always meant to be yours, Ms. Corbett."

And it was all caught on camera by the reporters who had been camping outside all morning.

Reporters who, naturally, all worked for the newspapers, networks, and media sites completely owned by the Obsidian Court.

By tomorrow morning, the Russell family would be a laughingstock across the entire continent.

Lucia dusted off her hands.

A lieutenant stepped up. "Call from Kingsland. Morgan is requesting immediate deployment of Division XIII to the capital."

The Obsidian Court was divided into over eighty different divisions, each specializing in a specific sector.

Division XIII was the world's most elite medical unit.

Without a change in expression, Lucia casually brushed some invisible dust off her shoulder. "Division XIII? What for?"

Was Morgan still holding onto false hope?

The lieutenant also found it completely absurd. He watched her face carefully before answering, "Word is... LORD is alive."

Lucia's brow violently twitched. "Alive? What, was she just playing dead for fun?"
