When she opened the containers, several dishes lay inside, still steaming and smelling incredible. There were honeyglazed pork belly, rich chicken consommé with prosciutto, and panfried sea bass with crispy skin–allclassic, homestyle comfort fare.
Riley hadn’t tasted cooking that reminded her so much of home since she’d left for Havenbrook years ago. That familiar blend of sweet and savory aromas hit her, and her stomach growled instantly. She ate more than she had in a long time that evening.
With a full, warm stomach, she felt like herself again–renewed, somehow.
After the meal, Riley got up and casually pointed toward the room on the other side of the living room, the one overlooking the river. ‘I’ll take that one.”
Sebastian walked over and thoughtfully switched on the light inside. A soft, warm glow immediately filled the space.
“Alright,” he said to her. “Get some rest.”
Now that she’d eaten, Riley felt her energy returning. Watching him turn to leave, she suddenly felt playful. Leaning against the doorframe, she teased, “What, not going to join me?”
The man’s shoulders stiffened at once.
He turned slowly, meeting her bright, mischievous eyes. He let out a quiet, resigned sigh. “Don’t start with me right now.”
Anyway, he’d waited all these years. One more night wouldn’t hurt.
Riley smiled. She found his serious, slightly flustered expression oddly endearing.
“Fine. Good night, then.”
Sebastian held her gaze. “Good night,” he replied softly.
He took a few steps toward his own room, then paused as if something had just come to mind. Turning back, he asked, “Will you.., be up early tomorrow?”
The hopeful note in his voice told Riley exactly what he meant.
She held back a laugh and played along. “What, worried I’ll oversleep and sneak off? How about… you come wake me in the morning?”
“Okay,” Sebastian agreed almost too quickly.
Back in her room, however, Riley wasn’t sleepy at all.
She went into the spacious bathroom, filled the large soaking tub with hot water, and sank in for a long, relaxing bath. It felt like washing away years of accumulated weariness from her time in Havenbrook.
Afterward, she walked over to the wide floor–to–ceiling window.
Outside glittered the dazzling riverfront skyline at night.
The dark water reflected lights from both banks, and in the distance, the glow of downtown tower shone clear against the night sky.

Riley remembered that back home in Nexopolis, her school had been miles away from anywhere like this. Coming from a foster care background, she’d never imagined she’d one day be standing here, looking down at a view she’d only ever seen in travel magazines or on TV.
Now, even though she’d left the resentment and complications of Havenbrook behind, the road ahead wasn’t going to be easy,
either.
Returning to the Harpers, who were practically strangers, and marrying Sebastian–whose own life was layered and complex- meant that what awaited her wasn’t exactly a safe, simple happily–ever–after.
But as Riley studied her own reflection in the dark glass, she didn’t feel lost or scared anymore. Everything she’d endured with the Ashfords had hardened into something like armor–solid and unbreakable
In that moment, she felt ready to take on whatever came next.
In the other room, Sebastian couldn’t sleep either.
He lay awake, watching the ripples of light from the river drift across the ceiling, his mind adrift.
The person he’d carried in his heart since he was young was just on the other side of the wall. Soon, they would be bound together legally–the closest two people could be in the eyes of the law.
That thought thrilled him more than closing any billion–dollar deal.
Separated by only a wall, the two of them lay awake in similar stillness, somehow connected even in silence.
