She sighed. She accepted her fate.

What was done was done. In Beast World, mating wasn’t exactly scandalous.

She wasn’t so rigid as to die of embarrassment over it. The initial shock had been rough, but once she’d worked through it, she let it go.

“Fine. But Davy–I saved your life. Last night stays between us. Swear it.”

“Why? Mating is perfectly natural for beastfolk. You’re acting like you did something shameful.”

Davy rested his tiny head on his own coiled body, exhausted.

Claire stammered.

“Just–keep it secret. That’s all.”

She glanced at him. He looked completely indifferent–like bonding was no more remarkable than eating or sleeping.

“Davy, don’t tell me you’re experienced. Is that why you’re so calm about this?”

Claire was genuinely curious.

The sheer size of Davy’s true form had shocked her, and his transformation into a drake had been even more astounding. For a beastfolk like that–was he really experienced?

It was the only explanation she could think of for why he’d listened to an entire night of it and remained unfazed.

Davy answered honestly.

“No, never. I’ve just seen it a lot. Rogue beastfolk don’t exactly close the door. I’ve never done it myself, but I know plenty.” He sounded almost proud.

Claire gave him a thumbs–up.

Davy was startled.

“Yes! Exactly like that! Especially when the one called Marcus kissed you. That was the worst.”

Claire tested the waters.

“You really don’t know what that feeling is?”

Davy lifted his head.

“Know what?”

“Nothing. Ahem. Probably just your body recovering.”

Davy nodded.

“I think so too. I’m so weak right now.”

Claire rubbed her chin thoughtfully.

“True. You’re a Level 3 and a single fur tunic nearly smothered you. Just now, two fingers were enough to shut you up. That’s not normal.

“Did the drake transformation fail? Is that why you shrank?”

This was Claire’s first encounter with a drake transformation. She had no idea what success looked like–or failure. Failure was probably being reduced to dust.

But Davy hadn’t died. He’d just gotten very small. What was going on?

“No, the transformation succeeded. I’m just completely drained. Give me time, and I’ll be able to shift back to my drake form.”

Hearing that the transformation had succeeded, Claire couldn’t help studying the tiny snake.

Small and thin as he was, she could see tiny bumps where horns and claws would eventually grow–on his head and belly.

Once his power returned, he’d be able to shift back. She was sure of it.

Claire was genuinely happy for him. She scooped him up and held him close to her face.

“That’s great!”

Then her tone shifted.

“But let me remind you–if it weren’t for me hiding you, soaking you in hot spring water every day, feeding you Ember Fruit and water–you’d be dead.

“So, I’m your savior. And a life debt is meant to be repaid. Understand?”

Claire was satisfied.

“Good. Then last night goes to the grave.

“Fine.”

Davy drooped, his tiny head sinking. His energy was visibly fading.

Claire poked his head gently, worried.

“Hey. You okay? We barely talked, and you’re already wilting.“.

Davy’s voice was barely a whisper.

“I just… need to sleep…”

His eyes drifted shut before he could finish his sentence.

Then, they snapped open again. He asked worriedly, “Wait–what happened to Jeffrey?”
