The beastfolk were filled with regret after cursing Finlay for being a coward earlier. Some of them wanted to slap themselves for saying it.

A few emotional beastfolk even broke into tears as they continued apologizing. “My Lord! We were wrong about you!”

Finlay looked completely heartbroken. Anyone who didn’t know the truth would think he had lost his own child instead of some stranger’s female.

Hearing the voices around him, Rufus couldn’t help cursing under his breath.

“Dang it! Are all the beastfolk here idiots?”

Finlay had tamed them with just a few words.

Zane curled his lips into a faint smile.

“Not surprising. I expected this. A guy who can climb to the position of city lord was never going to be simple.”

Of course, Zane wasn’t easy to deal with either. He still had another move prepared.

But then…

He shifted his gaze away from Finlay and looked toward Marcus beside Claire. Marcus didn’t look good at all. He still forced his usual bright smile onto his face, but the hand hidden behind his back was trembling slightly.

He must have been hurting badly.

His father had died, yet the next city lord kept dragging his name out in public again and again just to raise his reputation and build a noble image in the hearts of the beastfolk.

Zane let out a quiet sigh. Marcus was still too young. No matter how hard he tried to hide it, some emotions would always slip through. If Finlay had not been busy putting on his act, he probably would have noticed Marcus’s reaction already.

Bringing up Hector had been a smart move.

What a sly old bear!

So bears were not always honest and simple after all.

Zane lightly tapped his fingers and whispered a few words into Rufus’s ear. The two of them

Claire still could not hear anything. She had no idea what Finlay had said. She only saw that the beastfolk below, who had been glaring angrily at Finlay moments ago, were now all staring at her and Marcus instead. Their eyes burned with fury so fierce it almost felt real.

The furious stares made Claire uneasy. She turned to look at Marcus beside her.

His clear eyes were glossy with tears. Red veins spread across them. His pale skin almost seemed to glow, while the tips of his ears had turned red.

Even though he was smiling, Claire felt that he looked deeply sad.

“Marcus, what’s wrong? Did Finlay say something?”

Dang these ears of mine. Of all the times to stop working, it had to be now.

Marcus seemed lost in his world. It was like he had gone deaf too. He gave no reaction to Claire’s voice. His eyes stayed fixed ahead, wide open without even blinking.

Then suddenly, a clear tear rolled out of his eye and hit the ground.

“Marcus! Don’t scare me!”

Panic rushed through Claire. She grabbed his arm and shook him hard, trying to pull him back from whatever distant place he had drifted into.

She couldn’t lose him.

Claire kept calling his name in panic. The ringing in her ears had left her temporarily deaf, turning the whole world silent. But in that strange silence, she suddenly heard a voice deep inside her mind, like a cry coming straight from someone’s soul.

“Pinch the space between his thumb and finger. Hard.”

The voice was calm and steady, carrying a strange sense of authority.

Claire had no time to think about where it came from. Marcus looked completely dazed, trapped inside his mind no matter how much she called for him. She quickly grabbed both his hands and pinched the pressure point hard.

Marcus jerked suddenly. His whole body trembled, and little by little, warmth returned to his

eyes.

He tilted his head slightly and sniffed the air, catching Claire’s scent. His lips moved as he quietly said a few words.

His response finally eased Claire’s fear a little, though worry still filled her chest.

“What happened to you just now, Marcus?”

But before he could answer, she hurriedly added, “I can’t hear you right now.”

She was deaf, and Marcus was blind. They really were a pair now.

Thankfully, her hearing loss was probably only temporary. The ringing in her ears had already started fading. In a little while, it would likely disappear completely.

Marcus, though… she still had to find a way to heal his eyes. She wanted him to see their adorable little babies someday.

Wait!

Claire suddenly remembered an herb she had learned about back in the fox tribe. It was supposed to help treat eye problems.

She just couldn’t remember the name right now.

Looks like I’ll have to search for it later.

Claire barely cared about her temporary deafness. Right now, all she wanted was to know how Marcus was doing. But how could she communicate with him?

She wasn’t Bertie. She didn’t understand the strange way Bertie and Marcus communicated with each other.

At least from her perspective, it definitely wasn’t sign language.

Just then, the mysterious voice spoke again inside her mind.

“He says he’s fine now.”

The deep voice was low and smooth, almost magnetic. Hearing it so clearly inside her heart. made Claire shiver.

That was definitely not Pome’s voice.
