Chapter 172 Blome, Betrayal, and a Broken City

Finishe

Davy let out a heavy breath.

“So it’s only temporary. That’s good. But I still won’t let that beastfolk named Finlay off easy. Anyway, wha did you mean by ‘translate?

“I mean I need you to pass messages to me. Tell me what all the beastfolk outside are saying.”

With Davy reading the situation for her, even if she could not hear, she could still keep up with everythin happening around her. Honestly, it was almost the same as not being deaf at all.

Davy would never lie to her.

And besides, she still had Pome.

That was exactly what happened. The second Davy understood what Claire wanted, he immediately started translating for her without wasting a single moment.

“That useless former city lord! If we’d known he was this pathetic, we never would’ve picked him to lead

us!”

“Dang it! He dragged all of us down with him!”

“The former city lord was actually this kind of beastfolk? Man, what a disappointment!”

“And people still call him the young lord? Give me a break. We’ve all been acting respectful to a blind guy for what exactly?”

Davy repeated every furious insult the beastfolk below the altar shouted at Claire. Hearing it all made her curl her toes in embarrassment.

Only those rough, thickheaded beastfolk could say such crude things so naturally.

Davy had grown up in the wild. He had never mixed with shady people like them, so he did not even know how to curse properly. Even when he got mad, the harshest thing this honest, simple guy could say was “dang it.”

r

Just like back when Jeffrey insulted him, Davy had stayed silent and simply slammed into the wall with brute force.

But now, filthy words were pouring out of his mouth one after another. And strangely enough, he sounded pretty convincing saying them.

Was this what people meant by bad company rubbing off on someone?

Honestly, a beastfolk’s manners had nothing to do with their background. Jeffrey might have been the ruthless leader of the rogue beastfolk, but he rarely cursed. He carried himself with far more class.

Davy was the same in another way. He was terrible with words and only knew how to charge forward with brute strength, swinging wildly without any skill.

Chapter 172 Blame, Betrayal, and a Broken City

Finished

Compared to the beastfolk of Grimstone, those two rogue beastfolk honestly seemed far more civilized.

Claire was crying inside. She quickly stopped him.

“Davy, you don’t need to repeat every single word. Just tell me the important parts!”

She could not let this sweet, clueless guy get corrupted. If he started throwing around curse words every other sentence in the future, her ears and her peace of mind would both suffer.

“Oh!” Davy answered obediently.

Then he gave her a short and simple summary of everything happening on the altar

While Claire and Davy talked, the beastfolk’s anger toward Marcus reached its peak. Under Finlay’s influence, they blamed the innocent blind young beastfolk for losfg the war.

It was his fault for not joining the battle!

It was his father’s fault for making the wrong decisions!

Marcus’s sharp hearing caught every insult thrown at him and his family.

His fists slowly tightened. His eyes trembled slightly, and his whole body shook with disgust.

Grimstone had once been dying and empty. It was his father who rebuilt it little by little. Under his leadership, the city became lively again. More beastfolk came to settle there, and countless homeless beastfolk finally found a safe place to belong.

Chapter 173 A Savior in the Middle of Chaos

Finis!

Marcus’s father had always been a kind man. Every policy he carried out helped the people of the city. H treated every beastfolk with sincerity, and after becoming city lord, he worked himself to the bone every single day.

Losing the war had never been what he wanted. More than atryone, Marcus’s father had wanted victory. That was why he had taken Marcus’s mother and older sister onto the battlefield with him. If Marcus had not been blind and so young back then, his father probably would have brought him along too.

But fate had not been on their side this time. The Beast God had abandoned thera, and they lost.

Not only did they lose, but all three of his family died in battle.

Only Marcus was left behind, a blind young beastfolk barely surviving alone in that empty home.

After losing them, Marcus had suffered deeply. He had fallen into despair and even wanted to follow then in death. But one night, in a dream, he saw a blue figure. A beastfolk told him to stay strong and said that one day, he would meet someone who would bring him happiness.

So, Marcus kept living. He stopped blaming himself. He stopped hating the world. He faced every beastfolk in Grimstone with a smile.

But now, those same beastfolk who had once benefited from his father’s kindness were cursing his father’s name. They even turned their anger toward Marcus himself.

All the peace from before suddenly felt fake. The resentment hidden in everyone’s hearts finally exploded and they pointed their blades at the man who had once helped them.

It was beyond disappointing.

People like this didn’t deserve his mercy.

Marcus’s emotions snapped. Right as he was about to lose control, shift into his beast form, and tear through the crowd, a pair of soft hands suddenly covered his ears.

The sweet scent from Claire’s hands surrounded him. Even though her small hands could not completely block out the ugly shouting, the soft touch against his ears instantly cleared his mind. The hateful voices slowly faded into the background as he heard Claire say softly, “Marcus, don’t pay attention to them. Remember this-you only need to care about the people you love. Everyone else is just a passing breeze. Why care about what the wind thinks?”

The fog clouding Marcus’s mind suddenly broke apart. His eyes lit up.

“Claire’s right! Why should I care about those people? Caring about Claire alone is enough for me!”

Just like the beastfolk in his dream had said, his world had finally welcomed someone who truly loved him.

Claire was his savior.

Claire saw Marcus speaking, but after waiting a long time, she still did not hear Davy translate anything.

Chapter 178 A Sevior in the Middle of Chaos

Finis

Anxious, she quickly asked in her mind, “Davy, what did Marcus say? Hurry and tell me!”

The green snake around her wrist tightened slightly. She lowered her head in pain.

After a long silence, Davy finally muttered unwillingly, “He said he cares about you So cheesy. Female, d you really like hearing sweet talk like that”

Deep down, Davy added another sentence he did not dare say aloud.

Because he could never do that himself. No matter what, he just could not say romantic words. He had struggled with that for a long time.

He truly could not understand how some beastfolk could talk so smoothly.

What he was good at was action.

If something blocked his way, he would smash it aside.

If he liked someone, he would claim them.

If danger came, then even if he was covered in wounds, as long as he was still breathing, he would get bac up and keep fighting.

Everything in his world was direct and simple. No tricks. No complicated thoughts.

But this skinny little beastfolk in front of him could say things like that without even hesitating. It was ridiculous.

Claire smiled so sweetly that she looked happier than someone eating soft cake piled high with rich, sugary frosting.

With excitement rushing through her, she completely missed Davy’s gloomy mood. She wrapped both arms around Marcus’s arm and held it tightly against her chest.

Since she was still nursing, her curves were fuller than before. The soft pressure against his arm made Marcus freeze for a second. His face quickly turned bright red.

That distraction helped pull his attention away from the angry shouting below the altar.

The two leaned against each other quietly, as if the furious insults from the beastfolk around them no longer mattered. It felt like they had fallen into a tiny world that belonged only to them.

Down below the altar, Rufus let out a mocking snort.

“Seriously? This guy really knows how to pick the perfect moment.”

Even so, he still followed Zane’s plan. Rufus moved through the crowd, stopped to whisper a few words to several beastfolk, then quickly strode away on his long legs.

At the very top of the altar, Finlay had already returned to his luxurious chair. He watched the crowd attack Marcus with satisfaction. Even now, that female still stayed beside the blind wolf. But Finlay firmly believed that, eventually, she would become his.

Finish

Behind him stood the deer beastfolk who served as the high priest of the Sky Rite ceremony. He glanced up at the sky. The blazing sun had already reached its frighest point The time had come. The priest stepped forward, knelt before Finlay, and spoke respectfully.

“My Lord, the blood sacrifice will begin soon. Should we proceed?” Finlay nodded.

Then he raised his voice toward the crowd, his face full of fake sorrow.

“I know everyone is angry. But this is not Marcus’s fault. Hector’s crimes belong to Hector alone. Yes, they

were father and son, but we must judge fairly. Marcus may be a Level 3 beastfolk, but he never took part i the war!”
