Chapter 223 A Campfire Feast in the Wild
Evening primrose really was rare. They spent the whole day flying around, but by the time they st the evening, they still hadn’t found any.
“It’s okay. We’ll take it slow,” Claire said, comforting Rufus. “Even if we can’t find any, maybe some b will sell it during the Wildclaws Festival.”
Rufus flapped his wings and landed on a tree branch.
Down below, Zane and Marcus had already started a campfire. Marcus was feeding formula to the younglings while Zane walked over to Claire. “Now that winter’s over, all kinds of prey are but again,” said. “What kind of meat do you want tonight, Claire? I’ll go hunt it right now.”
As he spoke, Zane shifted into his white wolf form. His wolf ears twitched sharply.
Instead of answering, Claire pulled out a pressure cooker, a bag of rice, and some dried meat from he storage space.
“We traveled all day. You should rest. No hunting today,” she said with a smile. “I’ll cook.”
Zane had been leading the way the entire trip. He stayed alert the whole time. Claire knew he had to be exhausted.
Honestly, she felt sorry for him,
She had spent the whole trip sitting on Rufus’s back or being carried in his arms. She hadn’t even walked step herself.
The white wolf instantly shifted back into human form and sat obediently nearby, curiously staring at the strange pot in Claire’s hands.
Claire fetched clean spring water, rinsed the rice twice, and poured it into the pressure cooker. Just a few minutes later, steaming hot rice was ready.
Then she chopped up the dried meat and mixed it into the rice with diced potatoes and dried greens befor closing the lid again to let it cook a little longer.
When the lid finally opened, the smell of food drifted through the air.
Claire sprinkled in some salt and added a few drops of sesame oil. The smell became even richer
While she cooked, Zane stayed busy too. He watched closely to figure out how the strange cooker worked while using his claws to cut the earlier prey into bite-sized chunks. Then he skewered the meat onte branches and roasted them over the fire.
By the the Clare’s rice was done, the grilled meat was ready too. She sprinkled barbeque seasoning the quas ati a mouthwatering smell instantly spread through the campsite

Claire laughed and wiped one little nose with a piece of hide cloth before waving her hand dramatica
“Alright, time to eat!”
She scooped rice from the pressure cooker into bamboo bowls and handed them out.
The younglings crowded around Claire’s legs, staring up at the bowls in her hands. They rolled around the ground and fussed loudly, begging for food too.
Claire gave them each a little portion. The second the bowls touched the ground, the younglings happ buried their faces in the food.
Some of them were eating so fast they didn’t even notice their back legs had lifted off the ground.
“Slow down! It’s hot!”
Claire watched them devour everything. Some were already trying to ask for seconds, but the pressure cooker was empty.
Meanwhile, Rufus’s bowl was piled so high with rice it nearly reached his chin.
A grain of rice clung to the corner of his mouth. When he noticed Claire looking at him, he grinned and licked it away.
“Claire’s cooking is the best!”
He planned to make up for all the meals he wouldn’t get to eat once he left for the Sacred Grounds.
Just thinking about leaving Claire made him feel hungry, so he turned his sadness into appetite and practically claimed the entire pot for himself.
Claire sighed helplessly and patiently explained to the younglings, “This is your first time eating rice. You can’t eat too much at once, okay? Or your stomachs will hurt.”
Several little bellies were already round and swollen.
Besides, she still had plenty of rice bags stored in her preservation space. The farm was growing rice too, and the next harvest would come soon.
They would have more rice than they could ever finish. There was no rush.
“Claire, stop worrying about them and eat already!”
Marcus handed her bowl back to her. For some reason, he felt like Claire’s bowl smelled even better than

The glossy rice soaked up the rich, smoky flavor of the garlic bacon. Crispy bits of bacon added a savor crunch, while the garlic melted into every bite. The smell alone was enough to make her appetite come roaring back.
Back in her old world, she had spent years learning how to cook healthy meals while taking care of her body. Garlic bacon rice was one of her favorite comfort foods, so she had made it countless times. By n her skills were almost perfect.
Zane and Marcus both ate with complete satisfaction. Especially Marcus. He looked like he wanted to en the bowl too.
Claire watched him bury his face in the bowl for a long while before finally walking over to check on hi The bamboo bowl had already been chewed down to half its original size.
“Good grief, Marcus,” Claire said, staring at him. “Have you seriously never seen bamboo before?”
Marcus looked up. The ruined bamboo bowl slipped from his hands and hit the ground with a clatter.
