Chapter 256-The Clan Is Saved

Once they were outside the clan, Zane shifted into a white wolf. Claire climbed onto his back, and they headed off in a random direction.

After they had traveled for a while, Claire told Zane to stop.

“Okay, this should be far enough. They shouldn’t be able to see us from here.”

A massive musk ox that had only recently died appeared on the ground.

Her storage space preserved things so well that blood was still flowing from the fatal wound in the musk ox’s neck.

Zane shifted back into human form, leaving only the pair of wolf ears on top of his head, and stood bes Claire as he surveyed the area.

“Claire, all the water sources around this clan have dried up. Once we leave, they probably won’t survive for long.”

Claire nodded and rubbed her chin thoughtfully.

“I might have an idea.”

Claire put the musk ox back into her storage space, then explored the area with Zane. They found only a small river that had dried up long ago, its bed cracked from end to end.

Following the riverbed, Claire eventually found a willow root that still had a faint green tint.

She took two shovels out of her storage space, and she and Zane began digging.

After digging a little over six feet, they found damp soil at the bottom. When Claire squeezed a handful. murky water seeped through her fingers.

“This is great! The lynx clan can be saved!”

Claire stopped digging and returned to the clan with Zane.

When Garen saw the musk ox they had brought back, taller than one of their stone houses and large enough to feed them for two or three days, he was stunned.

“Zane, you’re incredible! I wonder when our clan will finally produce a ranked warrior. Even a Level 1 beastfolk would be enough!”

Claire reassured him.

“That’s something you’ll have to work toward yourselves. But I have more good news for you.”

Garen’s eyes lit up again.

Claire led him to the large pit she had dug earlier, with Zane following close behind.

“Look. If you dig down a few more yards, water should start coming up soon.”

Garen was overjoyed. He jumped straight into it, and the damp soil clung to the soles of his feet. He couldn’t remember how many days it had been since he had felt anything like it.

He shifted his hands into claws and began digging furiously at the bottom

Claire felt bad watching him struggle and was about to take out the shovels they had used earlier, but Zan stopped her with a look.

Fortunately, beastfolk claws were extremely sharp. After only a short time, Garen had deepened the pit by another three feet, and even more water began seeping in.

He scooped the muddy water into his claws and laughed as he jumped around at the bottom of the pit.

Claire pointed into the deep pit.

“This is called a well. Whenever you notice signs of water underground, such as green vegetation or damp soil, you can try digging down. When the rivers dry up, you can use water from the well instead.”
