Davy woke up early the next morning, only to find himself surrounded by the younglings.

Scarlet stood a few feet away, watching him carefully. She stomped one little foot and asked, “Who are you? Why are you in our treehouse?”

Zane Eleven hovered unsteadily in the air.

The younglings all talked at once, wondering where the strange green snake had come from. Every no and then, the younger pups let out little yips and squeaks. Even so, not one of them dared to step close

A tiny white wolf pup suddenly jumped out from the crowd.

Davy couldn’t help wondering how someone with such a tiny little voice could say so much without takin a breath.

Scarlet snorted.

Zane One was a snow–white female wolf pup. She was calmly grooming her fur.

Without even looking up, she said, “Let Twelve take a look. You know his special eye doesn’t actually see anything. It’s no different from the rest of our eyes.”

Scarlet nodded, clearly agreeing.

Amused, Davy watched the three–eyed little wolf hop over to him. Twelve opened his third eye as wide as he could and studied Davy from head to tail with a serious expression. After checking him over several times, he lowered his head in disappointment.

“I can’t tell.”

Scarlet snorted in contempt.

She shifted her legs, trying to lie flat. A sharp ache shot through her body, making her suck in a breath

The memories from last night rushed back all at once. Claire shut her eyes with a groan.
