They touched down soft and smooth on the grass.

Claire looked down and found the wind had blown Zane Nine’s fur out in every direction, puffed up round and wild like a dandelion in full bloom.
“Look at you, Nine. You are absolutely adorable.”
Claire ruffled her fur, and Zane Nine dissolved into bright, helpless laughter.
The rest of the younglings scrambled into a line and started taking their turns down the slide one by one.
It was their first time with anything this exciting, and they lost themselves completely in it. Even at dinner they couldn’t focus, their eyes drifting back to the slide every few seconds.
Landon and Altair had already said their goodbyes and headed back well before that.
Zane made a mental note to hunt some extra game later and send a share over to them.
Altair’s words had been sharp, but he’d put real work into building the tree house all the same, and those were two entirely separate matters. Gratitude was still owed.
Davy took over the hunting entirely. He was still buzzing from the news of becoming a father, and a fierce, primal sense of responsibility pushed him to bring back more game than ever to make sure Claire got everything she needed.
For the next several days, Davy split every haul into portions. One went toward that day’s meals, another go sent to Corvin, Kieran, Landon, and Altair, and whatever remained went straight into Claire’s storage space.
Davy was every inch the drake he was born to be. He came back from every hunt absolutely loaded with game, sometimes hauling in so much that other beastfolk had to pitch in and help carry it all.
One of the hunting party set down the beast he’d been dragging, swiped the sweat from his forehead, and said to Claire, “Davy is something else, I’ll tell you. Those savage beasts took one look at him and bolted. We couldn’t even keep up, and he just charged straight into the middle of the herd all by himself.
“We were scared for him at first, but honestly? The savage beasts were the ones who needed somebody worrying about them.”
Davy was worth ten hunters on his own, and all kinds of game stacked up steadily inside Claire’s storage space with every passing day.
Before long, Claire’s belly swelled like a slowly inflating balloon.
Even heavy and round with younglings, she stayed as nimble as ever, scaling trees and scrambling onto rooftops without skipping a beat.
Every time she did, Zane planted himself nearby with his nerves strung tight, terrified she might slip.
Her three beast mates often walked her through the clan grounds with one on either side, and the sight of her rounded belly drew worried glances from nearly every beastfolk they passed.

Aurora came by every few days bearing nourishing gifts, and each time she showed up, she took Claire’s hands in hers and said, “Claire, you’ve got younglings in that belly, and you need to be careful.
“Évery year, a few females in our clan lose their young. Stay away from Corvin’s place for now. I’ll go check on things there for you.”.
Claire turned her down.
She felt stronger with every passing day, practically light on her feet despite the weight she carried, and visiting Corvin’s eggs every morning had become a daily ritual she refused to give up.
“Aurora, think of it as my morning walk. I’m not tired at all. Besides, staying active makes delivery easier when the time comes, right?”
Aurora thought it over and decided Claire had a point, so she turned her attention to Claire’s beast mates instead.
Claire munched on fruit from her storage space and watched Zane, Marcus, and Davy line up in a row while Aurora talked their ears off about how to properly look.after her.
The fruit was ripe and sweet, bursting with juice, but it still left her with the nagging feeling that something was just slightly off.
Marcus held his head high, his ribbon hanging still against his back, letting every word of Aurora’s lecture fall onto deaf ears.
Zane had eyes only for Claire, his warm gaze so soft and full it looked ready to overflow, and every Claire gave him a playful wink, the smile at the corner of his mouth deepened just a little more.

Davy was the only one actually paying attention, nodding quietly every now and then, filing every single. word Aurora said away in his heart.
Then a massive goose swept in from the distance, and Claire heard Tyne’s voice ring out from all the way across the clearing.
“Claire! I’m here!”
Perched on the goose’s broad back sat a petite female, none other than Tyne herself. She seemed to be carrying something, and the moment the bird touched down, she leaped off.
She thrust a woven basket toward Claire with a bright, radiant smile.
“Claire, I picked these straight from the forest myself. Try one right now! They’re wonderfully sour!”
The fruits glowed a soft, pale green, giving off a light, clean fragrance.
Claire took one and bit in, and a rush of tangy sweetness flooded her mouth, lighting up every taste bud all
at once.
“These are incredible! Thank you, Tyne. You remembered I crave sour fruit when I’m carrying younglings!”
Tyne tossed her head with a charming grin.
“Of course! Back then I honestly thought you were picking so many sour fruits because you had nothing
