Chapter 316 Caring

Gorvin scooped the pale little dropping right up in his beak, and before Claire’s expression could settle int whatever it was becoming, he flung it clean off of the side of the tree.
He didn’t eat it.
Claire’s feelings hovered somewhere between disappointment and relief, and she blinked at Corvin withou quite knowing which expression to put on.
Corvin turned his head toward her. Something in the way she was looking at him told him everything he needed to know, because the corner of his beak curved up into a smile.
He was smiling.
A shiver ran straight through Claire.
Corvin turned his attention back to the hatchlings and kept feeding, patient and unhurried, tearing each strip thin enough not to choke them. The process took a long time, but he didn’t rush it once.
Kieran and Aurora gathered up the remaining beastfolk and headed out not long after.
Zane settled his hand around Claire’s waist and spoke softly near her ear. “Let’s head back too. Corvin will take good care of them.”
Claire nodded and wrapped her arms around Zane, and they made their way back down to the ground together.
Far away in the Sacred Grounds of the eagle clan, a storm was building up.
Savage winds tore through the trees, hurling branches and rubble in every direction. Even the smaller beasts couldn’t escape its reach. Everything the churning vortex swept over got ripped off the ground and thrown skyward, living and dead alike spinning through the air.
Gillian clung to a branch with every bit of strength she had left, straining against the screaming wind.
The tree she’d grabbed was barely thicker than her arm span, and it didn’t last long. The roots tore free of the earth in one violent lurch, and she was launched into the sky along with it.
“Help! Somebody help me!” Gillian shrieked as the vortex spun her in nauseating circles, the world bleeding into a dizzy blur.
Even a beastfolk as powerful as Rufus hadn’t dared venture outside in wind like this. He’d stayed deep inside ‘his cave with his wings tucked close to his body.
When the tornado swept past the cave entrance, Gillian spotted him through the chaos and screamed. “Help! Please, help me!”
Rufus lifted his head from beneath his wings and looked at her for one brief moment.
Gillian’s heart leaped with hope, but then Rufus tucked his head back under his feathers without a second glance, completely unbothered, as if the screaming woman caught in a tornado outside his door was
beneath his concern.

Chapter 316 Caring
Finished
It was the first time in Gillian’s life that death had felt genuinely close, and the beastfolk she’d set her heart on sat right there in plain sight, looking straight at her like she wasn’t worth the effort. Cold and merciless.
Icy wind clawed at her limbs from every direction. Gillian squeezed her eyes shut in despair.
Then Rufus exploded off the ground in one violent burst and drove straight into the heart of the tornado. His wing clipped Gillian hard across her body and sent her sailing out of the vortex’s reach in a single powerful sweep.
Gillian crashed down into a soft stretch of meadow grass and stared up at the sky in disbelief as the tornado carried Rufus further and further away until he vanished completely.
She cried out in a panic. “Rufus, come back!”
But Rufus was already gone, and the tornado dissolved around him, leaving behind nothing but wreckage and Gillian, alone in the middle of it all.
“Why would you do something so reckless?” She buried her face in her hands and sobbed for a long time, but the sea eagle never came back.
She finally forced herself upright on trembling legs.
The miasma blanketing the Sacred Grounds had split apart at that moment, opening a narrow path that led out of the valley.
Gillian stared at the exit she’d spent so long waiting for, then dragged herself forward with heavy steps, murmuring as she went. “I’ll make sure your family knows what happened to you. I’ll bring that back for you. It’s the least I can do for atonement.”
The moment she cleared the boundary, the miasma sealed itself shut again. Anything living that strayed into its reach fell silent on the spot.
At the very place where the tornado had died out, the earth caved inward, leaving behind a pit too deep to see the bottom of, its crumbling edges still giving way as fresh soil tumbled down into the dark.
Deep in the darkness below, Rufus lay pressed against the ground.
After a long, still silence, he raised his head and swept his gaze around him, then spoke low and deliberate, “Finally. The real entrance to the Sacred Grounds.”
Back in the eagle clan, Claire showed up to Corvin’s tree every single day without fail.
The younglings grew a little bigger with each passing day learned to spread their wings and catch air, and gradually stopped treating Claire like a stranger. They’d drift over to her on their own now, nibbling from her hand and pressing their faces into her palm.
A small head pushed into Claire’s palm with a gentle, insistent nuzzle, rubbing back and forth like a creature asking to be indulged.
Claire looked down to find a bird barely reaching her knee standing at her feet, and it had nine heads.
