Chapter 318 Wonder
Finishe
Nobody knew if Rufus had run into trouble out there, or if something had simply held him back against hi will.
Something clenched hard in Claire’s chest without warning, and a feeling swept through her that she couldn’t catch before it was already gone.
Eva and Burrow said their goodbyes and left.
The younglings finished their baths and spread out across the grass to soak up the afternoon sun.
The warmth settled over Claire like a soft blanket, and her eyelids grew heavy. She was just on the verge of giving in when Davy’s voice cut through the drowsy quiet.
“Wait, something’s wrong! Where did Eleven go?”
Claire’s eyes snapped open. She swept her gaze across the grass, and sure enough, the mischievous Zane Eleven was nowhere to be found.
“You think he wandered off somewhere to play?”
Her nerves pulled tight at once. Claire got to her feet and sent Davy through every tree house in the area, even checking the slide the younglings loved most. Not a trace of Eleven anywhere.
Under Claire’s direction, Davy took the other younglings back through every spot they’d played that day, while Claire and Zane fanned out from the tree house in widening arcs.
On a narrow, unfamiliar path cutting between the trees, Zane found a feather from Eleven’s wing lying on the ground.
Claire’s tears came the moment she saw it. She stared at the feather resting in her palm, still carrying the faint warmth of Eleven’s scent, her voice breaking when she finally managed to speak.
“What if something’s happened to Eleven?”
The memory surfaced fast. Davy once mentioned crossing paths with the cut-tailed Jeffrey just outside the clan grounds. What if Jeffrey had followed them back?

Then the path curved, and a finely crafted wooden house appeared just ahead. From inside came Eleven’s unmistakable voice, high and startled.
Claire pressed urgent hands against Zane’s chest. “Hurry! Eleven’s in there!”
Zane pushed straight through the open doorway.
This house looked nothing like the rest of the eagle clan’s tree houses. It sat flat on the ground rather than up among the branches, appearing almost ordinary from outside except for being slightly taller than expected.
But stepping inside made the strangeness of it clear immediately.
The interior split into two full stories, with a spiral staircase tucked against the wall in the corner, connecting the floors above and below.
The lower level held simple wooden furniture and a collection of hand-carved toys, each shaped into a different small creature with remarkable precision and life.
Everything sat arranged along large shelves lining the walls, with the center of the room left completely open, like a proper hall.
Claire saw no sign of Eleven on the lower floor and urged Zane up the stairs without pause.
The spiral staircase looked almost identical to the ones Claire remembered from the modern world, except that every piece of it was built from solid, polished wood.
They climbed step by step, and at the top, they finally spotted a tiny figure darting through the air.
Eleven.
“Zane Eleven! What on earth were you thinking, running off like that?”
Claire snatched Eleven right out of the air and checked him over frantically. Not a scratch anywhere on him. Only then did the fear finally begin to release its grip, and all the scolding she’d been holding back came pouring out.
Midway through, her tears came back completely against her will.
She honestly hadn’t expected herself to turn into such a crier.
Eleven clearly knew he’d done something wrong. He dropped his head and weathered Claire’s words in silence, and when she finally wound down, he sniffled and answered in a small, guilty voice. “I’m sorry, Mom.”
He looked so pitiful that Claire’s heart softened at once, and she pulled him into her arms and held him tight.
understand? From now on wherever you want to go, you tell me first.”

pointed across the room.
“Mom, look what I found over there! Those things look so strange. Do you know what they are?”
