Chapter 34-Preparing for Winter
They set off.
The leaves in the forest had started to turn yellow. A cool wind blew through, and everything felt quiet and a little lonely.
Inside the storage cave, a gyrfalcon sat wish its head tucked under its wing, fast asleep.
It mumbled now and then in its sleep.
“Yum… so good…
“Female… cook for me forever…”
Suddenly, it heard footsteps nearby. Rufus’s eyes snapped open.
He quickly walked to the cave entrance and saw a giant white wolf. Recognizing Zane, he yawned lazily and turned to go back inside.
Zane had been coming every day at mealtime, bringing delicious food made by Claire.
This must be the same.
But just as he turned, he stopped. A faint scent drifted through the air.
It was her. That female.
He spun around..
The white wolf rushed up to him, then shifted back into human form. In his arms was Claire.
“Hey, you finally decided to come?” Rufus lifted his chin proudly and whined. “You left me here all alone for days!”
Claire blinked.
“Huh? Didn’t Zane come every day?”
“I don’t care about him.”

Chapter 40 A Cure in Fire
Elodie stepped aside and made room for Claire.
“No need to look, Ms. Palmer.”

Claire leaned in and whispered a few words into Elodie’s ear. Almost at once, Elodie’s expression eased.
At the end, she glanced at Hazel and quietly stepped back.
Hazel hadn’t heard a thing. She asked carefully, “Ms. Palmer, what do you think…?”
Elodie waved her hand.
“Asking me won’t help. I don’t know this condition. But I’ll give you a tip, Claire can treat it.”
Hazel’s eyes lit up. She looked at Claire with sudden hope, completely forgetting how she had just accused her.
“I can treat her, but I have a few conditions.”
“Yes, yes, anything you say!” Hazel agreed quickly.
Fiona’s condition was getting worse. Her face looked terrible, and her body kept twisting in pain.
She didn’t even have the strength to curse anymore. She could only glare at Claire, full of anger and
resentment.
Claire saw how miserable she looked. She stuck out her tongue at Fiona.
“First, when I treat her, no one interferes. You can watch, but no talking.”
“Second, Fiona has to apologize to me in front of everyone. She stole my stuff, so she needs to pay me back. I want that bright red fur.”
Claire pointed at the most eye-catching piece in the pile. It was a bird hide, soft and warm-perfect for newborns.
Fiona had worked hard to get it and used to show it off all the time.
Fiona’s eyes went wide with anger. But the itching all over her body felt like ants biting deep into her skin. The pain made it impossible for her to speak.
“Agreed! We agree to everything! Can you start now?” Hazel rushed to answer for her.
Claire cleared her throat. She told Fiona’s mates to wipe the blood off her. Then she picked up a burning torch and slowly walked over.
Fiona stared at her, heart pounding. Claire’s eyes looked too bright. The smile on her face felt strange. And that torch… even from a distance, she could feel the heat.
Alarm bells went off in Fiona’s head. Panic hit her, and she struggled weakly.
Care in Fire
That ugly bitch had to be taking this chance to get revenge. She was going to burn her alive! Claire spoke in a cold voice. “You two-hold her hands. Don’t let her move.”
The two mates nearby quickly grabbed Fiona and pinned her down.
others gathered again, watching closely. Everyone was curious, but no one dared to speak.
felt her heart shake. She worried about her daughter, but she was also afraid Claire might go too far.

e only one truly calm was Zane. He stood there like a rock..
Claire walked up to Fiona and brought the torch close to her skin.
Fiona screamed, “Don’t!”
The flame was almost touching her. Claire really dared to do this in front of everyone? She had to be crazy!
What a lunatic!
Even if I died, I’d never forgive Claire!
But the burning she expected never came.
All Fiona felt was heat on her skin. When she opened her tightly shut eyes, she saw the torch hovering about half an inch away. The flame warmed the patch that had been itching like crazy.
It felt strange.
In an instant, the itching faded.
“It’s not itchy… that’s so weird…” Fiona muttered.

Fiona couldn’t wait. She wanted to rush back to her cave right away.
Finished
Claire slept until dark. By the time she woke up, Zane had already cooked dinner. He made Silkroot with meat, added a little salt, and set it aside to cool.
They were just about to eat when someone shouted from the yard.
“Claire! Why did you poison Fiona?”
Claire frowned and looked at Zane. She was about to get up, but Zane pressed her back down and put a fork in her hand.
“Don’t worry about it. Eat first.”
Nothing mattered more than Claire filling her stomach.
Zane walked to the cave entrance and glanced coldly at the beastfolk outside.
The male who came was one of Fiona’s mates. He had been told Claire was alone, so he had come in confidently. But the moment he saw Zane’s icy face, all his courage disappeared. Even his voice dropped.
“Zane… you’re here too. I, uh… I just came to ask Claire to check on Fiona…”
His voice grew weaker until he couldn’t finish.
Zane frowned, clearly annoyed.
Looks like the previous lesson wasn’t enough. They/still hadn’t learned.
He stared at the man like he was nothing more than an ant.
Claire was already starving. Since Zane told her to eat, she didn’t hold back.
Zane’s cooking had gotten even better.
“Zane, come eat!”
If he didn’t hurry, she might finish everything.
Even she was surprised by how much she could eat. If Zane hadn’t been hunting so hard every day, she would’ve passed out from hunger by now.
Zane threw the man a warning look, then went back to sit beside Claire.
The two of them ate slowly. Only after they finished did they walk out together.
The male had been waiting for a long time. He didn’t dare complain. His attitude was much better now,
“Fiona is sick. Ms. Palmer isn’t here. Could you please come take a look?”
Chapter 38 The Itch That Wouldn’t Stop
Claire raised a brow.
Finished:
Everyone knew she had been learning medicine from Elodie. Sometimes sick beastfolk came to her. At first, she just treated them for practice. But after a few cases, she actually cured them. Even Elodie had praised her.
Still, Fiona had never come to her like this before. Something felt off.
“Could this be a trap again?”
Even though she had doubts, Claire followed the man toward Fiona’s cave.
Zane stayed right beside her, casting cold looks at the reckless male from time to time.
A crowd had already gathered outside Fiona’s cave. Even with all the chatter, Fiona’s cries were still loud.
“So itchy! I’m going crazy! Scratch harder!”
The male leading them finally let out a breath of relief. That walk had been torture.
He pushed through the crowd and led Claire and Zane inside.
Fiona’s cave was big and well stocked. The pile of animal hides in the corner alone was huge.
Several of her mates surrounded her, scratching her body as she ordered.
They were already using a lot of force, but Fiona still wasn’t satisfied. “Harder! More!”
Her upper body was covered in red marks. Her skin was swollen. Every time she scratched, it left a cut. Blood seeped out and stained her fur tunic.
“So hot… so itchy… it hurts! I can’t take it. I need to take this off!”
Without caring that others were outside, she started pulling at her clothes.
Just then, Gavin pushed through the crowd. Seeing her about to strip in front of everyone, he slapped her
twice.
Fiona froze for a moment.
“Are you crazy? Why did you hit me?”
“Have some shame!”
At that moment, Bruno stepped forward.
He looked rough, but he was reasonable. He pulled Gavin aside and spoke to him quietly.
Gavin’s expression changed right away. When he saw the blood on Fiona’s body, he turned and shouted at the crowd at the entrance.
“Get lost! What are you staring at? Go home and look at your own female!

Chapter 36 A News That Shook the Clan
The youngest beastling in the clan was already ten years old. That meant no one had gotten pregnant in the past ten years.
Elodie and Hazel had been worried for long time. They even brought in males from other clans to pair with their females. Still, not a single pregnancy.
And yet Claire got pregnant in less than a month?
Some beastfolk were shocked. Some laughed it off. A few females looked at Claire with clear jealousy.
Fiona was the first to snap. She shrieked, “I don’t believe this! You’re lying! You’re a liar!”
had been trying day and night with her mate, and Claire still beat her to it? She couldn’t accept it.
Fiona grew more hysterical, shouting “liar” over and over, a few older females stepped in.
“Fiona, calm down! You’ll get pregnant sooner or later!”
“No wonder Claire has been craving sour fruit. I remember when I was pregnant, I couldn’t eat anything else.”
The experienced females all nodded in agreement.
But Fiona still didn’t believe it. Her bloodshot eyes locked onto Claire.
Claire felt great inside. The crazier Fiona got, the more it showed how much she cared. So Claire added fuel to the fire.
“It’s okay, Fiona. I’m not mad. You’ve never been pregnant before, so you wouldn’t know cravings are normal.”
She rested a hand on her slightly swollen belly and smiled.
That smile pushed Fiona over the edge.
In an instant, Fiona shifted into a scruffy fox. Her fur stood on end, black mixed with patches of yellow. She bared her teeth and lunged into an attack stance.
Claire’s heart dropped.
Wow. Fiona really couldn’t take much. If she actually attacked, how could Claire handle it?
Because she was pregnant, Claire couldn’t shift into her beast form. Her body felt heavier too. She wasn’t in any condition to fight.
She quickly asked in her mind, “Pome, if she knocks me down or scratches me, will it hurt the baby?”
Pome answered calmly, “No. Unless she cuts open your stomach-
“Stop! Stop here! You’re scaring me. Claire cut in, her scalp tingling.

“Zane, you’re amazing! This cave is big and looks great!”
Claire didn’t hold back her praise.
Zane’s ears turned a little fed.
“Every male knows how to dig a cave.”
He pointed to a pile of firewood stacked like a small hill in the yard.
