Chapter 39 When Greed Turns Deadly

Bruno stepped in and stopped him. He pointed at Claire.

“I told him to go get her.”

Gavin glanced at Zane, who didn’t react at all. Then he looked back at Claire.

The moment Claire walked into the cave, she noticed a half–eaten piece of raw Silkroot near the entrance. There was a clear bite mark on it–small and sharp. A female’s bite.

Then she saw Fiona’s condition. It clicked right away.

Fiona had eaten the Silkroot raw and had an allergic reaction.

The root looked familiar. It was the very one Claire had dug up that afternoon. Somehow, it had ended up in Fiona’s cave. It didn’t take a genius to guess–Fiona had stolen it.

Talk about instant karma.

Bruno walked up to Claire, guilt written all over his face.

“I’m begging you, please save Fiona.”

“Don’t beg her!” Fiona screamed. “This is all her fault! She poisoned me! She did this to me! Didn’t you say you were bringing my mom? Where is she?!”

She was out of control. Her hands kept moving, clawing at the air. If her two mates weren’t holding her back, she would have already shifted and started scratching with her claws.

That would feel better.

Claire rubbed her nose lightly.

“I can treat her, but she refuses help. What can I do?”

Right now, Fiona’s symptoms were only on her skin–red, swollen, and itchy. Not serious yet. But it could get worse. It could affect her breathing, even lead to shock.

Claire figured she could let Fiona “enjoy” it a little longer.

At the same time, in Hazel’s cave, she frowned, looking worried. Elodie looked just as troubled.

“Elodie, winter is coming in a few days. We still don’t have enough food stored. What are we going to do?”

Elodie sighed. “We just have to hurry and gather more these next few days.”

But they both knew the truth. Everything edible near the clan had already been picked clean. No matter how hard they tried, it wouldn’t be enough.

This winter… many would die again.

Suddenly, one of Fiona’s mates rushed in, panicked.

“Hazel! Something’s wrong! Fiona’s been poisoned!”

Hazel’s face darkened. She got up at once and pulled Elodie along.

Elodie was old and walked slowly, so Hazel had a male shift into beast form to carry her.

On the way, Hazel learned what had happened.

Her face turned even darker. Then she quickly changed her tone and spoke politely to Elodie.

“We’ll have to trouble you for this, Ms. Palmer.”

Her attitude was much more respectful than before.

Inside, Elodie cursed, but her face stayed calm. Her wrinkled skin barely moved as she spoke.

“She stole someone else’s food and got sick from it. I might not be able to treat her. We’ll see.”

She didn’t spare Hazel any dignity.

Hazel felt embarrassed, but she held it in and hurried toward Fiona’s cave.

When they arrived, Fiona was lying on the ground, covered in blood. Her breathing was fast and shallow. Her face was bright red.

“What happened? Why aren’t you helping her up? How did you take care of my daughter?” Hazel snapped.

Her mates didn’t dare argue. They rushed to help Fiona up. But Fiona struggled wildly. She scratched one of them across the face.

“Ms. Palmer, please check on her,” Hazel urged.

Elodie stepped forward and examined Fiona carefully. The more she looked, the deeper her frown grew.

“This is strange… very strange. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Before arriving, Elodie had planned to let Fiona suffer a bit. After all, Fiona had bullied her favorite student before.

But now, looking at her condition, Elodie felt curious instead. Still, no matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t figure out a treatment.

She was so focused that she didn’t even notice Claire standing nearby.

Until Hazel suddenly spoke, her tone sharp and harsh.
