The snow had stopped, but the cold wind still howled. The temperature was low. A few beastfolk walked over slowly. When they got closer, Claire recognized Elodie and Hazel, with several others behind them.
Seeing Claire standing outside in the snow, Elodie hurried forward and grabbed her hands.
“Claire, why are you out here? You just gave birth. You need to stay warm. You really shouldn’t be out in the wind!”
She needed to take good care of her body so she could have more children later.
Claire led Elodie and Hazel inside. The others were stopped at the door by Elodie.
“You all stay outside. The newborns are weak. Don’t bring in any illness.”
Hazel had already rushed in. She stood by the small bed and counted carefully. Only then did she truly believe it.
“Hazel, Hazel! I told you, didn’t I? Claire really had twelve babies. Four of them are girls! You didn’t believe me yesterday!”
Elodie looked proud, finally getting the last word.
Hazel nodded again and again, still in shock.
“Yes, yes, I just couldn’t believe it. I never thought our clan would have a female this fertile! Our future finally looks bright. Thank you, Beast God!”
Zane and Rufus stood to the side. Rufus, especially, watched Hazel closely, his eyes sharp with caution.
Even though Hazel was usually tough and loud, now her eyes were full of tears. She looked at Claire.
“Thank you, Claire. Our clan is counting on you!”
Claire froze for a moment.
Dang it! Counting on me?
What, am I supposed to give birth to a whole clan by myself?
That is a bit too much.

She was about to say something, but Rufus spoke first.
His eyes narrowed, sharp like a hawk’s, locking onto Hazel and Elodie.
“About Claire’s fertility, I hope you keep this completely secret.”

Hazel, who had just been dreaming of a bright future, felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on her. Her heart sank.
“Why?”
She had even been thinking about contacting other clans to find more mates for Claire. If that happened, other clans would fight to become her mate. Hazel could benefit from that.
Rufus seemed to see right through her. He let out a cold snort.
“Drop those thoughts. If this gets out, do you really think your small clan–with only two Level 2 fighters–can stand against the larger clans?”
Hazel instinctively looked at Zane.
“Zane, you’re Level 2 now? Since when?”
Her mind was spinning. This visit had brought two shocking pieces of news.
Zane gave a faint smile.
“Not long ago. Although both Rufus and I are Level 2, we still wouldn’t be able to stop the big clans if they came to take Claire.”
Hazel’s brief excitement faded again.
Zane was right.
They were just a small, weak clan. A large clan could destroy them with ease. A female like Claire was rare even among big clans.
Only then did Hazel realize how foolish her earlier idea had been. If they tried to invite other clans, Claire might be taken before they could even choose anything.
“You’re right. This is serious. We must keep this secret,” Elodie said, her tone heavy.
After the excitement wore off, she understood the danger.
The clan’s survival might now depend on this.
Hazel’s mind was spinning.

“Some people in the clan probably already know,” she said, glancing toward the beastfolk standing guard outside the cave.
Claire let out a soft breath. “We’ll just do our best. Keep it quiet for as long as we can.”
There was no such thing as a perfect secret.
The babies couldn’t stay hidden forever. Sooner or later, others would see them, then everyone would know.
Hazel nodded.
“I understand. I’ll remind everyone.”
