Claire’s head snapped up, tears still clinging to her lashes—but a flicker of hope spread across her face.
The lightning was still building.
There was still an eighty–first strike.
Davy wasn’t dead.
Jeffrey’s brows knitted tightly together. Then he saw the drake in the trench slowly rise into the air, drifting upward toward the storm clouds.
In the dragon’s eyes, Claire’s small figure was reflected–but whatever he felt, she couldn’t read it.
The next second, the drake shot straight into the storm clouds and disappeared.
Jeffrey cursed under his breath.
“Damn it! Why are you so hard to kill?”
This wasn’t good. He had to do something.
His gaze dropped to the formation on the ground. Without a second thought, he rushed over, his body shifting into a king cobra. With a few quick sweeps, he tore through the pattern and wrecked it.
Then he noticed the Ember Fruits scattered nearby. Opening his mouth wide, he swallowed several in one gulp.
Heat flared through his body, sharp and burning. Gritting his teeth, Jeffrey forced himself to look up at the storm clouds.
“Let’s see what you do now.”
It all happened in a flash. Claire didn’t even have time to reach
Jeffrey had already destroyed the formation.
He was trying to sabotage Davy’s transformation.
But the final strike still came.
୮
A bolt of lightning over three feet thick tore through the sky, flooding the darkness with a blinding violet glow. The storm clouds lit up from within, leaving the drake nowhere to hide.
The thunder that followed shook the air itself, hitting so hard Claire had to cover her ears.
For the first time, she truly felt how terrifying the lightning was.
“Ahhh!!!”
The drake’s cry tore through the thunder.

This final strike was fiercer than any before.
Lightning raged through the clouds, surging and twisting for a full three minutes before the thunder finally started to fade and the flashes died out.
The storm clouds slowly began to break apart.
But the figure Claire had been waiting for never showed. The sky where he’d been was completely empty.
“Where’s Davy?! Davy!”
Claire shouted.
They’d both been watching–how could he just disappear like that?
“Hahaha! Blown to dust! Hahaha!”
Jeffrey laughed, louder than ever.
The energy he’d been building in his palm slowly died away. There was no need for him to do anything
now.
That stupid snake was finished–gone for good. With nothing left of him, no matter how tough he’d been, there was no coming back from that.
Jeffrey grabbed Claire tight around the waist. She struggled, scanning the sky for any trace of Davy.
But the sky was wide and empty, not a thing in sight.
If anything had been there, it would’ve been easy to see.
Holding Claire tight, Jeffrey checked around the hot spring again and again, making sure Davy was truly gone without a trace. Only then did he coil around her and move off.
Claire hung limp in his grip, her head drooping as he carried her wherever he wanted.
With his biggest enemy gone, Jeffrey couldn’t hide his excitement. He even started talking more.
‘Told you it was pointless…
‘Female, come with me and lay eggs…
‘At Level 1, you’ll give me more–and stronger–eggs…”
Claire felt numb. Then all of a sudden, something about her slim waist felt off.
She glanced at Jeffrey. His greedy, eager eyes kept drifting over her, making her skin crawl.
No… any sudden moves now would catch his attention.
She forced herself to stay calm, keeping her face blank as she lowered her gaze, focusing on the strange feeling around her waist.

What was that?
Snow started falling again
Claire shivered hard, unable to stop. Jeffrey’s cold snake body felt like ice pressed against her.
His pace slowed.
