It had to be said–Scarlett was pretty well–liked in the town.
The townspeople were willing to share information with her.

Thelma opened her eyes, looking unfazed. “No need. I already told you I can take care of myself. I don’t want strangers bothering me.
“And what kind of show is this anyway? It’s full of young stars and internet personalities. They’ve never done real work in their lives. If she comes here to cook for me? I’d probably end up cooking for her instead.”
Yvonne said, “The girl says she’s very skilled in the kitchen. She can satisfy anyone.”
“Anyone?” Thelma snorted. “How old is she? She sounds confident. Just because she can follow a few cooking videos and make some decent dishes, she thinks she’s naturally talented? She doesn’t know the first thing about real skill.”
Yvonne laughed along. “Mom, not everyone’s like you, you know?”
Her mother had been a professional chef–a renowned one.
Twenty years ago, she became famous. People would line up just to try one of her dinners.
But a few years later, she had an accident.
One winter, while looking for a special ingredient, she slipped into a lake and nearly drowned, staying submerged for half an hour.
‘Since then, she’d suffered from chronic leg problems.
Now, in her older age, it had gotten worse.
Her legs were constantly cold and aching, making walking difficult. She had tried countless treatments, both modern and traditional, with little improvement. They said the freezing lake water she endured back then had almost ruined her legs. Now, the fact that she could still manage to walk occasionally was already considered a success.
She gently tapped her legs but said no more.
Yvonne couldn’t help but suggest, “Mom, why not let her try? The girl’s had a rough time in the entertainment world. She has haters everywhere online. If she can’t find work here, she might even end up sleeping outside tonight.”
“Online haters?” Thelma looked surprised. “All over the internet? What did she do?”
That kind of full–on hate is rare in showbiz..
Yvonne said, “The entertainment industry is like that–even the purest things can be made to look corrupt. Sometimes it’s just a matter of stepping on the wrong toes or becoming a target.”
She couldn’t believe such a young girl could be that bad to deserve being universally hated online.

She knew all the tricks.
The entertainment world was, indeed, a huge cesspool.
Thelma sighed. “Fine. Let her come in and try.”
After speaking, she glanced at her daughter, a little worried. “Will you show your face when the crew comes
in?
“Yvonne, looks aren’t everything. Maybe your fans will understand your situation if they see it.
“This time, you could let them see you as you are.”
Yvonne gave a bitter smile. “Mom, you know how cruel the entertainment industry can be.”
If the fans knew her current situation, they wouldn’t sympathize. They’d just call her disgusting.
That’s the harsh truth of the industry
Fans care only about looks
Appearance is what people notice first.
It’s the most important thing.
Thelma felt uneasy seeing her daughter like that.
Yvonne had been wearing a hat and mask the whole time.
Now she added sunglasses on top.
Her face was completely covered.
Yvonne walked to the gate and opened it, saying to Scarlett, “Come in. Just make sure the crew doesn’t film me. The only person living in this yard is my mother. You can come in first and do the interview.”
Yvonne had some acting experience herself, so she slightly altered her voice. Even if the crew captured it on camera, no one would recognize her.
“Okay.” Scarlett touched her nose shyly and followed Yvonne into the yard.
She felt a little embarrassed, having just overheard the quiet conversation between mother and daughter.
Once inside, the crew followed as well.
They had heard the conversation but didn’t point their cameras at Yvonne. They just filmed Scarlett walking into the yard and the older woman resting in the wicker chair.
The older woman’s hair was gray but neatly combed.
Her face had few wrinkles and almost no age spots.
