Chapter 14 Group One
Zayden and Brianna also gave Scarlett a quick once–over.
Zayden’s brows were slightly lowered, his expression a little dark.
They were here for the variety show because their agency told them to.
The plan was for them to flaunt their couple act on screen and build Zayden a “dotingly devoted boyfriend” persona, hopefully cleaning up his image a bit.
[Oh ho, let’s go, fight, fight, fight!]
[Why is everything so calm? This is not the chaos I signed up fo..
The show’s director, Michael Woods, came out and said, “Welcome to all six of our guests. Since ‘Faces of the Crowd‘ is about experiencing ordinary people’s lives, the place we found for you to stay is pretty basic. Let me walk you through the rules first.
“Since you’re living like regular people, each of you can only keep 200 dollars as starting cash. If you fail to earn anything, that 200 is your entire budget for the week.”
“Two hundred for five days?”
The other male guest, Adam, couldn’t help blurting out.
Brianna frowned as well, looking completely incredulous.
The place really was shabby. In the living room where they stood, there was only one worn–out sofa and a battered coffee table.
Brianna had just graduated from college at twenty–two; her family owned a tobacco company in Brookriver City.
The Mitchells counted as old money, about on par with Matthew’s clan.
They were “wealthy families,” sure, but nowhere near the true top tier.
If it weren’t for her boyfriend, Brianna would never have agreed to do th how.
Brianna and Scarlett were both bold, striking beauties.
But where Brianna was flashy, Scarlett’s vivid features carried a softer, almost fragile allure— natural, understated, and impossible to fake.
Otherwise, Elliot would never have agreed to let Brianna even audition for the role.
Michael continued, “If you really can’t carn anything, the 200 dollars is your safety net for essentials. But you’ll have work opportunities every day–put your backs into it and you’ll have more to spend.”
Brianna bit her lip and glanced over at Zayden.
Zayden patted her lightly and mouthed, Don’t be scared. You’ve got me.
Warmth bloomed in Brianna’s chest, and she flashed him a sugary smile.
Scarlett gave the couple a single look and scoffed inwardly.
This girl’s brain was pure romance mush. She clearly had no idea that in a year, Zayden would show his true colors and start hitting her behind closed doors.
Scarlett had zero intention of meddling.
She simply kept listening to the rules.
“Since this is a brand–new show and we’re still finding our footing, the first week will be three- person groups, but you’ll all head out solo to work and earn money. We’ve prepared three types of jobs. You’ll draw lots to decide what you’re doing today.
“Of course, since this is ‘Faces of the Crowd,‘ most tasks will be regular, everyday jobs. If there’s anything you don’t understand, feel free to ask. And because you’re in groups, different teams can swap jobs if you agree. You can also coordinate meals–whether you eat out or cook at home is up to you.”
[Right now, only Zayden and Brianna haven’t opened theirs. It’s three per group, and the other three are all Group Two, so those two have to be Group One with Scarlett.]
[Production is savage. They really know what the audience wants.]
Michael perked up. There hadn’t been any rigging, but he’d secretly hoped these three would end up together–and they actually had.
Zayden and Brianna unfolded their slips; sure enough, both said “Group One.”
They were grouped with Scarlett.
The viewers were thrilled.
Scarlett’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t mind being grouped with them.
She hadn’t planned on letting Zayden off the hook anyway.
In her last life, if he hadn’t smeared her name, she never would’ve died so miserably.
Leona, Hazel, and Raymond carried the heavier share of karma.
But Zayden was far from innocent–he had his own debts to pay.
However wretched her fate had been last time, he would end up just as ruined in this one to atone.
As for Leona and the others, she wasn’t planning to spare any of them either.
Scarlett’s gaze flicked to the charm hanging at Zayden’s throat, and she let out a soft, mocking huff.
The pendant he wore wasn’t a holy charm at all. Sealed inside was a relic taken from an unborn child–a fragment of bone never meant to see the world, harvested before life had even begun.
