Chapter 177 Delicious Fish

She learned her lessons from Ursula. Dragorian, too.

She wasn’t allowed inside the classroom, so she pressed herself against the window instead.

Ursula never once chased her away.

In the entire town, only two or three girls dared to climb windowsand learn that way.

The other parents wouldn’t let them come.

They said girls were meant for chores, for kitchens, for marriage. School was a waste.

Ena’s parents didn’t want her to come either.

But she still snuck off to school every day. She was beaten for it. She never stopped. After a few years, her parents couldn’t do anything about it, so they started turning a blind eye.

To them, it didn’t matter. In a few more years, they’d collect a wedding gift and marry her off.

By the time she finished, no one spoke.

They looked at little Ena with sympathy written all over their faces.

Guys, we’re here. This is the school.

Ena quickly led the guests to the school grounds.

The school in Yveton was rundownthree singlestory buildings forming a rough courtyard. Two looked like classrooms, and the smallest one was probably the teachersdorm.

It wasn’t big, but it did have a wide open yard.

The kitchen was openaira leanto tacked onto the side of the classroom, a brick stove crouched beneath it.

It was cleaned up neatly, but aside from one pot, there was nothing.

The teachers probably packed everything away before they left.

Everyone was starving.

No one had energy for anything else, so Scarlett started assigning tasks.

Someone went to fetch water, someone went to gather firewood, and Scarlett got to work prepping the ingredients.

Her hands moved with quiet efficiency.

She used the big pot on the stove and braised the fish.

She’d traded for a ceramic jar from the old lady at the little shop, planning to cook tice in it while roasting the other game and fish

But now they had a stove. They had a pot.

So, she kept it simple and made two dishes.

Braised fishand a quickstewed diced rabbit.

Soon, the air thickened with the scent of braised fish and spice.

Even Ena swallowed hard.

But she also knew it would be rude to hover while other people ate.

She walked over and said, Uncles and auntiesII’m going back now.

Even as she spoke, she swallowed again.

Why didn’t food at home ever smell like this?

It smelled so good.

And she hadn’t had meat in a long time.

Whatever her father hunted in the mountains, he sold in town to help with expenses.

So, meat rarely made it onto their table.

After that, Ena turned to leave.

Scarlett grabbed her wrist. Where are you going? If you go back, your dad’s just gonna hit you again. Stay here for now.

Yeah, yeah,Selina chimed in, pulling the girl down to sit. Eat with us. You even helped us gather firewood.

Ena stayed, her face turning bright red.

Scarlett filled a bowl of rice for her and piled on plenty of food.

She’d also traded for a few bowls at the little shop earlier.

This time, she couldn’t spare anything for the staff.

They could eat their bread.

Every staff member trailing the guests was here.

The ingredients they had weren’t easy to come by either.

The five of them gathered around the stove, eating hot, steaming food.

Selina, Nelson, and Adam ate until their eyes watered.

How did she make it taste like this with barely any seasoning?

Ena’s eyes sparkled as she ate. She looked up at Scarlett. Scarlett, your food is so good. It’s the best I’ve ever had.

She ate fish sometimes, too, but when she and her mom cooked it, it always tasted a little fishynever great.

But the fish Scarlett made was genuinely delicious.

Brianna, Zayden, Hazel, and Simon also followed Scarlett to the school.

They’d been trailing them the whole way.

And from Ena’s conversation with Selina, they’d already figured out what kind of life this girl hadand what this town was like.

Not everyone in the town spoke the Drerea dialect.

Some kids, and some younger adults, could speak Dragorian.

Most of them stumbled through it, but it was enough to communicate.

Watching Scarlett’s group start eating, their stomachs began to growl.
