Chapter 26 Handsome Reward
The three crew members looked at one another, stunned.
Finished
Since when did an ordinary home–invasion assault come with a hundred thousand in reward money?
Still, bonuses carned for outstanding performance on the job could be used as personal living expenses, so it fit the show’s rules.
“O–of course you can,” one of them stammered.
Viewers in the livestream were dazed, too.
“Huh? So, it wasn’t scripted? But this bonus feels off–at most this is a bravery award, and those are usually decided at the city level and take two or three months to pay out.”
“I seriously don’t get it anymore.”
“Wow, I knew Scarlett wouldn’t play along with some trashy script–I really like her face, totally natural, so I hope she never gets exposed for anything.”
The haters rushed in almost immediately.
“Heh, natural? Don’t make me laugh.”
Someone even posted two ugly, heavily edited photos previously circulated by the antis.
“Worried about a future scandal? She already crashed and burned ages ago.”
When Scarlett heard she’d be allowed to use the reward money for her daily expenses, she was delighted.
She headed back to the Ureavon District branch of the Brookriver City Police with the crew.
This time, the staff didn’t need to give statements, but they couldn’t take the cameras inside. either.
The three of them waited outside while a camera sat at a distance, pointed at the station’s main
entrance.
Once Scarlett stepped inside, Cody thanked her first thing.
He thanked her for saving Willow.
He also thanked her for the warning she’d given at the end.
He briefly filled her in on the suspect’s identity, a highly intelligent crimi
ithout her, he admitted, if Willow had been killed, they might never have gathered enough evidence to arrest him.
In the end, Cody couldn’t hold back and asked, “Ms. Sanchez, can I ask how you knew he’d taken a life before?”
“Physiognomy,” she replied.
Scarlett didn’t explain that she’d actually seen the resentment coiled around him.
She said it lightly, then couldn’t help giving Cody a second look and smiling. “Mr. Grant, you’re glowing. Something to celebrate lately? Got married?”
His marriage line was blazing red–had to be a fresh wedding.
Cody drew in a sharp breath.
He actually had just gotten married–he’d registered with his girlfriend two days ago and hadn’t even told his parents yet, much less his colleagues. There was no way an outsider could know.
All his doubts evaporated.
He knew genuine masters of the occult were vanishingly rare these days, and the girl in front of him looked far too young.
But age
wasn’t the measure of ability.
Cody smiled. “You’re impressive, Ms. Sanchez.”
He promptly transferred the hundred–thousand–dollar reward into her account.
He was honest with her, too: the money came from the rewards for the two old homicide cases -50,000 dollars each–and normally would’ve taken months to issue, but seeing how vicious the online backlash against her was, he’d applied to speed things up, and the bureau had agreed.
Scarlett smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Grant. I’ll get going, then.”
Leaving the station, she showed the three crew members the notification that the money had arrived.
The account had been opened by production using the guests‘ ID cards.
All of their show earnings would be paid onto that card.

Scarlett had asked Cody to send the reward there as well.
Sure enough, the balance was up by a hundred thousand, and the transfer c came from the Ureavon District branch in Brookriver City.

“I don’t get it. Since when does the police hand out a hundred thousand for bravery?”
“Heh, she obviously paid someone off inside–just wired herself the cash and called it a reward.”
“Don’t hate just to hate, or your account’s gonna get banned.”
Scarlett was in high spirits. “Guys, I’m treating you to a feast tonight!”
The three cameramen stopped being shocked and instantly started looking forward to dinner.
If her simple lunch dishes tasted that good, what would a full spread be like?
Humming to herself, Scarlett rode her little electric scooter to the market.
She bought plenty of seafood, some pork ribs and beef, plus a pile of fresh greens and side ingredients.
Then, she headed back to the set.
The other five guests were lounging in the first–floor living room. When Scarlett came in, their gazes were full of admiration and unspoken words.
