Chapter 279 Death Energy

The burning shop was a diner. It was a little past 1:00 p.m., so there had still been a few customers inside earlier. Now they’d all come out and were standing at a distance, watching.
The shop owners nearby had also rushed out of their stores.
They were worried the fire might spread and damage their shops.
Everyone stood at a distance, talking loudly and pointing at the flames.
The owner of the burning restaurant looked completely panicked. He stood far away, crying and shouting in distress.
The fire trucks had just arrived. Firefighters were pulling out hoses and preparing to fight the fire.
Maggie let out a long breath.
“The firefighters are here. It should be okay now, right?”
The taxi driver felt the same way.
“Good thing they got here fast,” he said. “From the looks of it, no one’s hurt yet. They’ll probably put the fire out soon.”
Whenever people see firefighters at a fire scene, they usually feel a little relieved.
Everyone knows what firefighters stand for. Even when they risk their own lives, they try their best to protect others.
Scarlett looked out the window. Thick black smoke rolled into the sky. The crowd around the scene was loud and chaotic. Meanwhile, the firefighters stayed calm. Some were guiding people away from the area. Others were spraying water around the building first to cool things down.
But Scarlett’s brow stayed tight.
The situation was not as simple as Maggie thought. The fire would soon be put out once firefighters arrived at the scene.
This fire would cause casualties.
Because Scarlett could see something others could not. Death energy.
That meant someone here was going to dic.

And the ones in the greatest danger were the firefighters standing closest to the flames.
Scarlett could already see faint traces of death energy appearing on several firefighters’ foreheads.
She didn’t even stop to think about whether she should help or not. When she looked at their young faces, her heart tightened. The youngest firefighter looked barely eighteen or nineteen. Scarlett had already decided to get out of the car.
Before she did, she quickly turned to Maggie. “I’m going down to take a look. Maggie, stay in the car. Do not get out. No matter what happens, don’t leave the taxi. Let the driver drive further and stop somewhere safe to wait for me. But do not come back here to watch. Do you understand?”
Her tone was firm, and her face was serious in a way Maggie had never seen before.
Maggie’s heart began to race.
She knew Scarlett was not getting out just to watch the excitement.
Something must be wrong with the fire.
Was something worse about to happen?
Could there be an explosion?
At a fire scene, explosions are the most terrifying and unpredictable danger.
Even if Scarlett was skilled, could fight, and practiced traditional medicine, she was still only human. If there was an explosion at a fire scene, there was nothing she could do.
If she ran down there now and the gas tank exploded, she could be blown to pieces.
Maggie stammered, “Scarlett… n-no. You can’t go down there.”
Scarlett replied quickly, “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
Then she turned to the driver and said, “Sir, please drive my friend ahead. There should be a place to park up the road. Wait for me there. I’ll be back soon.”
The driver was a local from Khiburn. His voice carried a soft local accent.
“Hey, young lady, why are you getting out? This isn’t the time to run toward danger. The light will turn green soon, and we’ll be moving. Hey, hey, don’t get out!”
Before he could finish, Scarlett had already opened the back door and stepped out.

They were close to the street where the fire had started. Scarlett ran about 150 feet and quickly reached the scene.
The driver watched helplessly as she ran toward the fire. He wanted to shout for her to come back, but cars behind them started honking. With no choice, he drove forward.
Maggie leaned against the window and watched Scarlett with worry. The taxi moved farther and farther away. Scarlett’s figure grew smaller and smaller. Meanwhile, thick smoke continued to rise high into the sky.
In front of something like that, humans looked small and fragile.
Maggie felt almost hopeless. All she could do was pray silently that there wouldn’t be an explosion. And that Scarlett would be safe.
Soon the taxi had driven about half a mile down the road before the driver finally found a parking space. He pulled over and stopped the car.
He wanted to get out and go back to see what was happening. But Maggie stopped him.
After getting out of the taxi, Scarlett ran straight toward the burning diner.
When she arrived, she heard a tall, muscular firefighter speaking with the shop owner.
“What kind of fuel do you use for cooking here?” the firefighter asked. “Natural gas, cooking oil, or charcoal?”
The owner looked miserable. “G-gas,” he said nervously. “There’s only one tank inside, but it’s a large one… about four feet tall and around a hundred pounds.”
The diner itself wasn’t big. It probably had eight or nine small tables inside.
Because of that, the kitchen used a large gas tank.
“How did the fire start?” another firefighter asked. He had a round, youthful face.
The owner hesitated. He clearly didn’t want to say.
But after a moment, he stammered, “I-I think it was the wiring in the kitchen. I suddenly heard crackling sounds. I was outside at the time. When I ran in, the kitchen was already on fire. There was cooking oil near the flames. By the time I got there, the fire had already grown bigger… and since it was close to the gas tank, I… I didn’t dare go in to try to put it out myself.”

Several firefighters quickly understood what might have happened. The diner probably had illegal or faulty wiring. That could easily start a fire.
The tall, broad-shouldered firefighter asked the owner another question. “Do you have any dangerous or explosive chemicals stored inside your shop?”
It was a routine question. Firefighters needed to know if there were flammable or explosive materials before deciding how to fight the fire.
The owner’s eyes flickered nervously. “N-No… nothing like that.”
inside and carry
The large firefighter immediately began giving orders. “Sterling, Egbert. I’ll go out the propane tanks from the kitchen. You two stay outside and control the fire.”
The kitchen definitely had propane tanks. Those were dangerous. If the fire reached them, they could explode.
And these were large tanks. If they blew up, the damage would be terrible.
“Vince, no!” the baby-faced firefighter named Sterling Pena shouted right away. “Let me go instead.”
Before they could argue further, Vince Fleming was about to rush into the burning diner.
But suddenly he noticed something strange. A girl was standing right beside him.
Not just any girl.
She was extremely beautiful. And she looked familiar. But what shocked him most was what she was doing.
She had bitten the tip of her finger. Then she used the blood to draw strange symbols on the ground.
Vince stared in disbelief. Before he could ask what she was doing, the girl had already finished drawing a set of strange markings.
The symbols looked messy and mysterious, almost like random scribbles.
After finishing the drawing, the girl began moving her hands in quick, complicated gestures.
Her fingers moved so fast it almost looked like the hand sigils people used in fantasy movies.
Hand sigils?
