No matter what, retired dogs were well taken care of.

Adoptive families were screened carefully to guarantee the dog’s quality of life.

Vivian’s eyes were turning red.

“They were talking about retiring Nala. The unit wanted to find her an adoptive family. Nothing’s finalized yet–she’s not officially retired. But I know Nala doesn’t want to retire. I think there’s still hope. She can be healed…”

Because Nala’s handler was Vivian’s father.

That was why Vivian visited the unit so often–to see her dad and Nala.

Her dad had brought Nala home for a two–day leave.

Once they went back, Nala’s retirement would become official.

So, Vivian had grabbed Nala and run.

Under normal circumstances, Nala wouldn’t just follow her away from her handler.

Vivian had resorted to trickery to lure her out.

With Nala’s sense of smell gone, the dog couldn’t assess situations the way she used to.

Vivian had run off yesterday morning. Last night, she and Nala had slept in this abandoned house.

Her dad was probably tearing through the whole town looking for her.

Hearing this, Lewis glanced at Scarlett.

This dog’s situation was genuinely unfortunate. Retiring her would be a real loss.

Every police dog in Dragoria was precious.

Nala was barely four with only two years into active service. She was still in her prime.

Most vets relied on modern medicine and machines.

Vivian jumped in immediately. “There’s a traditional medicine shop in town. They’d have needles. Should we go now?”

“Let’s go.”

They’d been planning to head into town anyway.

Vivian was ecstatic. She grabbed Nala, and they all headed out.

But at the doorway, she stopped. She looked back at Scarlett.

Scarlett read the hesitation instantly.

‘Don’t worry. If we run into your dad on the way, I’ll talk to him. Nala can be treated. She doesn’t have to retire.”

Scarlett had already been flagged by certain government departments. If she said she’d treat Nala, the unit would verify her identity.

They wouldn’t just rubber–stamp the retirement.

That was exactly what Vivian was afraid of–bumping into her father.

With Scarlett’s reassurance, she felt a lot better.

Four people and one dog left the broken house and headed for town.

By now, Vivian had figured out that Scarlett’s visit to this remote northern town had nothing to do with hiking.

“Scarlett, are you here for a shoot? Or do you have a patient here?”

She was a fan, and she knew Scarlett hadn’t been in the public eye much lately, only doing six livestreams a month to treat people.

Vivian froze and looked back at the empty space in front of the shack they had just left.

“Vivian, did you see the suspect?”

Vivian had been in that abandoned house since yesterday morning. She’d slept there overnight.

The suspect’s trail had gone cold in this exact area.

So, there was a very good chance Vivian had seen him.

Lewis cut in. “That’s him. Where did you see him?”

After searching since last night, they finally had a lead.

Nathan’s face showed a flicker of excitement.

Vivian pointed back toward the clearing in front of the abandoned house.
