Nathan nodded.
They’d have to wait until around 6 p.m. for full dark.
The group returned to the car.
Hidden by the thick stand of trees, any small movements they made would be inaudible outside.
Everyone had a simple bite to eat to line their stomachs.
They also set out a bowl of kibble for Nala, which she ate with gusto.
Her sense of smell was fully restored.
After eating, no one spoke. They sat in the car, waiting in the heavy silence.
They knew Killian wasn’t acting alone. The voice that had called Weston demanding 50 million hadn’t been his.
There were other kidnappers, though their exact number remained a mystery.
They still couldn’t fathom why Ivy had been brought to this specific, godforsaken place.
By 7 p.m., the world outside was pitch–black.
The surroundings were now pitch black.
Naturally, they didn’t dare turn on the car lights.
Scarlett felt around in her bag and handed out four sigils. “Five–Sense Sigils. Same as Nala’s. Bite your finger, smear blood on it, and it activates.”
She didn’t need one herself; her cultivation already made her senses incredibly sharp.
The four men complied without question, biting their fingers and applying the blood.
The sigils instantly dissolved into ash.
Suddenly, the darkness before their eyes seemed to lift; they could see their surroundings clearly.
It was far more effective than any night–vision goggles.
Not only was their sight enhanced, but their hearing and smell were sharpened as well.
They could hear the distant howl of the northern wind, sounding like the wailing of ghosts, and smell the faint, lingering scent of coal from the nearby mine.
Cody whispered, “Let’s move.”
He hesitated, cycing Nathan.

Nathan was… well, extremely good–looking. Beyond that, Cody wasn’t convinced he’d be much use in a fight.
Cody was worried he’d be a liability if things went sideways.
He wasn’t worried about Scarlett. He still remembered what she’d done to that home–invasion suspect- the genius criminal whose leg she’d shattered with a single kick.
With that kind of combat power, he suspected ten versions of himself wouldn’t be enough to take her down.
Cody hesitated, then said, “Nathan, maybe you should stay here with Nala.”
Nala had helped them track the suspect, but it was too dangerous to bring a dog into a potential firefight.
He feared the kidnappers might have weapons and didn’t want Nala caught in the crossfire.
Nathan said quietly, “I’m going, Mr. Grant. I can handle myself.”
Cody didn’t push it.
In the end, only Nala was left behind.
Scarlett crouched down and rubbed the dog’s head. “Good girl, Nala. Wait for us here. No matter what sounds you hear, don’t come looking for us. Just wait for our return, okay?”
Nala nuzzled Scarlett’s hand.
The five of them moved slowly out of the woods toward the dilapidated bungalows.
They stepped lightly.
Their movements were masked by the presence–concealment sigil, so it was dead silent all around. There was only the sound of the wind.
And that wind was their cover.
Upon reaching the rows of houses, Scarlett sensed no human presence; there was no sound of breathing
She leaned close to Cody. “No one here. They’re deeper in. The mine.”
Cody nodded but checked the bungalows anyway.
They were indeed empty.
The team pressed on and soon reached the mine entrance.
They slipped inside silently.
After walking about 32 feet and rounding a corner, they saw a faint glow emanating from further within
A wave of relief washed over them.

They were finally in the right place.
The five of them pressed themselves against the tunnel wall, remaining silent.
Thanks to the Five–Senses Sigils, they could hear muffled voices drifting from the interior.
“For fuck’s sake, how long do we have to squat in this dump? Middle of nowhere, not even a hot meal. Freezing cold crap every day.”
“Should be soon, right? I’m about done with rock–hard bagels and jerky.”
“Shut it. You remember what the boss said? We finish this job, and there’s enough cash to party for a long time. Eat what you want, do what you want.”
“Why’s the brat crying again?”
“So annoying. The boss won’t even tell us the next step. Can we just off her already?”
“G–guys, she’s probably hungry. Let me go check on her. Just… stay calm.”
That last voice–all five of them recognized it. It was Killian.
They had listened to recordings of his voice during the investigation.
Based on the conversation, there were four others besides him and the sobbing little Ivy.
