There were four others; their voices were the ones the team had just heard complaining.

They’d also mentioned a “boss“.

This kidnapping wasn’t about ransom at all.

Someone with serious money had specifically ordered Ivy taken.

Scarlett glanced at Nathan.

He instinctively looked back at her.

She was certain now: the siblings were hiding something.

Why else would a wealthy puppet master go through all this trouble for one little girl?

Scarlett wasn’t in the habit of prying into other people’s secrets.

The five of them waited, barely breathing.

Before long, Killian’s voice drifted out again.

He was talking softly to Ivy.

“Hey, stop crying, okay? If you keep crying, those guys might hurt you. Just be good, and maybe you’ll get to go home someday.”

Scarlett heard it clearly, Killian was different from the other four.

Those men tossed around words like “off her” and “rip the ticket” without a second thought–career criminals, almost certainly with blood on their hands.

Killian, on the other hand, had never taken a life. He didn’t even seem to have a record.

That was precisely why he’d been chosen as the one to grab Ivy.

The remaining kidnappers were likely wanted fugitives who couldn’t show their faces in public.

Then came Ivy’s voice–small, trembling, thick with tears.

“Mister, I didn’t mean to cry. I just… I need the bathroom. Can I go to the bathroom? Please?”

Outside, the five of them felt a spark of hope ignite.

If Killian brought Ivy out to use the bathroom, they could snatch her first and eliminate the biggest risk.

But Ivy was inside with those men.

They held their breath and listened.

Killian hesitated, then turned to the others.

“Guys, she just needs to use the bathroom. I’ll take her out back a bit–she can go inside the tunnel.”

One of them snapped, “In here? So we can all sit in the stink? Take her outside. There’s an old latrine, left out the entrance.”

The team’s fists tightened.

Killian said, “Right, okay. I’ll take her out real quick.”

“Gojon, get out of here.”

Silence followed.

Then, footsteps–Killian leading Ivy toward the exit.

A faint glow grew closer.

Killian had his phone out, flashlight aimed at the ground.

The five of them pressed flat against both sides of the tunnel wall. Killian’s eyes were on his feet; he never looked sideways.

What happened next took less than a heartbeat.

Scarlett stepped forward, fast as a blink, and drove her hand into the back of Killian’s neck.

His body went limp. Before he hit the ground, Scarlett had already caught him with one hand and snagged his falling phone with the other.

Ivy flinched at the sudden movement, her mouth opening for a scream-

But Nathan was already there. He scooped her up and pressed a hand over her mouth.

The moment Ivy caught the familiar scent of her brother, she knew. He’d come for her.

She swallowed the scream whole.

She clung to him, face buried in his shoulder, tears streaming silently.

In an instant, Killian was down, and Ivy was safe–without so much as a whisper of noise reaching the men deeper inside.

With Ivy secure, the priority was getting her out of the tunnel.

Scarlett hauled the unconscious Killian by his collar as they moved toward the exit.

Cody was stunned. He hadn’t needed to lift a finger.

Scarlett had moved like lightning.

And her strength was absurd–Killian weighed at least 150 pounds, and she was dragging him one–handed as if he were a duffel bag.

Her footsteps were as light and easy as if she were carrying nothing at all.

Cody shoved his shock aside and followed her out of the tunnel.

They cleared the tunnel and headed for the tree line.

Near the abandoned bungalows, Scarlett confirmed no one was around and whispered, “Mr. Grant, have someone take Killian to the woods. Cuff him and gag him.”

Cody nodded and turned to the youngest officer.

“Ray, get the suspect to the car. Cuffs on. Find something to stuff in his mouth.”

They couldn’t risk him waking up and alerting the men in the tunnel.

Scarlett added, “Don’t worry. He won’t stir for at least three hours.”

She knew exactly how hard she’d hit.

Cody gave her another long look.

Ray nodded. “On it, sir.” He hoisted Killian over his shoulder and disappeared into the dark.

Scarlett turned to Nathan and Ivy.

Nathan understood immediately.

She wanted him to go with them.

Ivy gazed up at Scarlett, eyes wide and shining.

She wasn’t afraid anymore.

If anything, she was looking at Scarlett with pure, undiluted awe.

She’d always known Scarlett would come for her.
