Chapter 369 The Truth in Her Final Look
5 Pearls
Scarlett’s gaze drifted somewhere far away, as though she were reaching into some distant memory.
After a moment, she said slowly, “More or less. I’ve read some of the official histories and the unofficial ones too. Princess Mona was very intelligent. I’ve also read a lot about the Ancestor, Augustus. He suffered a great deal in his youth, and even as a teenager, he was already deeply calculating and extraordinarily patient. He always knew exactly what he wanted.”
So as crown prince, how could Augustus not have known that if he gained a weakness, it would only become an obstacle, a knife turned against himself?
When it came to Mona’s death, he had allowed it to happen. He knew. He knew perfectly well that his nother would never allow Mona to live.
But he did nothing. Only when Mona actually died, he still hadn’t been prepared for it.
As Scarlett spoke, understanding slowly dawned on everyone around her.
Of course. Wasn’t that exactly right?
That was what truly fit Augustus’s character.
The reason Scarlett knew that Mona’s death had happened with Augustus’s knowledge and consent was simple.
In one of her past worlds, she had lived in Augustus’s era.
The 49 worlds she had passed through after her death in her previous life hadn’t been in other dimensions, other spaces, or parallel worlds. Every one of them had been part of the same world she lived in now, either somewhere in its history or somewhere in its future.
She had lived 49 times. She had become many different people.
In Augustus’s era, she had once been an assassin trained by his mother’s clan. No one knew Augustus and his maternal family better than she did.
And yes, it had indeed been Augustus’s mother who sent people to kill Mona. But Augustus had known.
The assassin sent that day simply hadn’t been her.
It was true that Augustus had liked Mona. It was also true that he knew he couldn’t let himself keep her.
So when his mother told him Mona would not be allowed to live, he had fallen silent. He hadn’t had a choice.
After Mona’s death, Augustus never truly loved another woman. Or perhaps, he had never really loved Mona either.
What he had always loved was power, rank, and the empire itself.
As a ruler, there was very little anyone could fault in him. Later in life, he expanded the borders, pushed

through reform after reform, gave the people stability and abundance, and carved out achievements worthy of the history books.
In this lifetime, the only person he had truly wronged was probably Mona.
Once Scarlett said that, everyone understood.
“Damn, the way Scarlett explained it actually makes perfect sense.”
“Exactly. I always felt Augustus was the type who loved the throne more than beauty. Ambitious to the
core.”
“So Scarlett’s interpretation is that Augustus already knew his mother’s family would kill Mona. He chose to let it happen, and Mona was smart enough to understand his attitude at the moment of her death. That’s why she didn’t look at him. She just closed her eyes…”
“With that change, the whole thing feels way more believable. It fits Augustus’s character better, and it makes Princess Mona feel much fuller too.”
Emmett seemed deeply affected too. He felt as though he understood the young Augustus a little more
now.
And because he was playing Augustus, that gave him a deeper way into the role.
He said, “Mr. Patton, I think I get it now. Let’s do the scene again.”
Calvert was excited too and immediately told the crew to get ready.
At last, everyone was in place again.
“Action!”
Scarlett did the scene once more, and her performance was just as arresting as before.
Princess Mona fell into a pool of blood. She lifted her eyes toward the hanging flower gate, where someone was coming through. But she didn’t look at the face of the boy she loved.
There was understanding in her gaze, and despair, and release. Then she closed her eyes.
The crown prince looked at Mona. He saw the girl he loved lying in blood, and something inside him broke apart. Pain and despair crashed through him.
And in that final moment, what he saw was the girl’s grief–stricken, despairing, knowing, and strangely relieved gaze.
He froze where he stood. Then, at last, a tear fell.
His face held remorse, and beneath it, a trace of confusion.
Had he been wrong?
“Cut!”
