Chapter 65 Threads of Truth
Alex was still angry. He hadn’t let it go and wanted to teach Pamela a lesson.

The guys in the group chat said they had already sent people to investigate. One of them asked him, “If Callie really is your real cousin, what do you think your aunt would do? Will she keep Gemma?”
Alex froze when he read that message.
He looked up, a little lost, and glanced at Zoey and Callie.
Zoey seemed to be talking softly to Callie. Whatever she said worked; Callie gave a shy smile. The tight fear on her face eased. The girl nervous, self–doubting look faded a little.
Scarlett kept track of the timing. The results should be coming soon. She stopped her cultivation and opened her eyes.
She looked at Zoey and Callie.
In truth, Scarlett had already guessed what Zoey would decide.
From Zoey’s physiognomy, she was strong–minded, sharp, and capable. She also drew clear lines between love and resentment.
She did care about Gemma. After all, she had raised her for 16 years. There was no way there were no feelings at all.
If Callie really was her biological daughter, Zoey would not keep Gemma around.
Everything she had already given Gemma, she would not take back.
But that was all.
Looking at the injuries covering her biological daughter’s body, Zoey would not give Gemma any extra
care anymore.
Because she would think about how her real daughter felt.
As long as Gemma didn’t do anything reckless, what Zoey had already given her would be enough to live comfortably for the rest of her life.
But not doing anything reckless–was that even possible for Gemma?
Probably not. Scarlett suspected Gemma had already crossed that line.
Zoey’s marriage was complicated and fraught with difficulties.
That meant Zoey’s husband was dealing with trouble caused by someone close to him.
And who that person was couldn’t be more obvious.
Scarlett watched as Zoey spoke gently with Callie.

Then Zoey’s phone buzzed. She checked it, frowned slightly, and said something to Callie. After that, she walked toward Scarlett.
Scarlett asked calmly, “Mrs. Crawford, is something wrong?”
It shouldn’t be the DNA test results.
If it were, Zoey wouldn’t look like this.
Zoey held out her phone for Scarlett to see.
“Your half–sister just sent me a message,” Zoey said. “Be careful around her. If possible, it’s best not to go home. If you need help, you can come to me.”
Just look at the way Hazel wrote that message. Did she really think Zoey was stupid?
Could Zoey not see the hidden meaning between the lines?
On the surface, Hazel sounded like she was apologizing for Scarlett. In reality, she was comparing herself to Scarlett, making herself look kind and considerate while painting Scarlett as rude.
At such a young age, she was already good at pretending and scheming.
No wonder Scarlett had publicly called Hazel out on Instagram not long ago.
Scarlett read the message on Zoey’s phone and raised an eyebrow.
Hazel’s fake messages were almost exactly the same as in her previous life.
Back then, after Scarlett’s face had been ruined, she attended a party hosted by the Xanders. She was mistaken for a thief. Amelia wanted to call the police.
Hazel had stepped in to plead for her and said nearly the same things.
“Thank you for the warning, Mrs. Crawford,” Scarlett said.
“Let me return the favor. Your husband has been dealing with some trouble lately, hasn’t he? It was caused by someone close to him. As for who that is … I think you already have a guess.”
Zoey’s heart dropped.
Not long ago, Gemma had asked them for 30 million to invest in a business.
Zoey and Daniel had refused. They later checked and found that the business partner Gemma was working with was actually planted by one of her husband’s rivals–a trap meant to ruin him.
Recently, there had been changes in positions. Someone was about to be promoted, and that meant someone else would take the open spot.
Many people were watching that position closely.
Daniel was the strongest candidate.

That was exactly why someone had gone out of their way to set him up.
After that, Gemma left home in anger.
A few days later, Daniel was suddenly investigated for corruption.
Zoey believed her husband was innocent.
The Crawfords and the Quinns were wealthy. He had no reason to take dirty money.
But someone had submitted evidence.
That evidence was a handwritten letter–written to look exactly like Daniel’s handwriting.
Daniel practiced calligraphy every day. Their home was full of his handwritten drafts.
Only family members had access to those papers. So who could have forged that letter?
The answer was painfully clear.
Zoey felt heavy inside.
It hurt, but she couldn’t even name the feeling.
In the end, she could only thank Scarlett quietly.
Then she blocked Hazel.
Just then, Zoey’s phone rang again.
She saw the caller ID and hesitated before answering. “Gemma.”
It was her daughter.
The moment Zoey answered the call, everyone in the police station turned to look.
Even Pamela couldn’t help staring at Zoey’s phone.
Gemma was her real daughter.
Pamela had always known her biological daughter lived well with the Crawfords.
With social media now everywhere, Pamela knew her daughter’s Instagram. She often looked at the photos Gemma posted. The luxury items in those pictures–Pamela couldn’t afford even one of them if she sold everything she owned. And under every photo were comments saying how lucky and enviable Gemma’s life was.
