Zoey was the first to react. She smiled and said, “I’ll cover the fee, Scarlett. Send me your account. And truly, thank you. Once things settle down, I would love to invite you to dinner. Would that be alright?”

Scarlett thought for a moment. “I’m busy lately. This Sunday is packed too. Let’s do it when I have time.”

Zoey nodded with a smile. “Alright.”

Scarlett sent over her account details and left.

She knew Zoey was generous.

After Scarlett left, Zoey transferred ten million dollars into her account. Then she turned to Callie and said gently, “Come on, Callie. Let’s go home.”

Callie nodded. When she saw Zoey reach out her hand, she hesitated. Then she slowly placed her thin, dark hand into Zoey’s pale, slender palm.

The mother and daughter turned to leave.

Behind them, Pamela’s voice rang out. “Z–Zoey…”

Zoey turned back, her face calm and cold.

Pamela burst into tears. “I’m sorry. I really lost my way. I didn’t mean any harm. I was just confused for a

moment.”

Zoey let out a short, bitter laugh. “No harm? You secretly switched our children and then abused my daughter for years. And you call that no harm?”

She looked at Pamela. “You’re apologizing because you’re afraid I’ll abandon Gemma, aren’t you?”

Zoey’s voice stayed steady. “To be honest, I once planned to let things go. I thought about the years of raising her. Even if I didn’t keep Gemma, I wasn’t going to take back what we had given her. I wanted her to live well.”

Her eyes hardened. “But I’ve changed my mind. Every single dollar we spent on Gemma, she will return it all.”

Then she added, “And the person you should apologize to isn’t me. It’s Callie.”

Even at a moment like this, Pamela only worried about one thing. She was afraid they would no longer want Gemma, and her daughter would lose her life as a rich girl.

She never once felt guilt for stealing Callie or abusing her.

Pamela stared at Zoey, fists clenched tight, rage burning in her eyes. She wanted to tear Zoey apart.

“How dare you! That’s not fair!” she shouted. “You raised Gemma for 16 years. Don’t you have any feelings at all?”

Zoey didn’t bother arguing. She took Callie’s hand and walked away.

Pamela tried to chase after them, but a woman in a black suit stepped in from outside the police station.

The woman nodded politely at Zoey, then blocked Pamela’s path.

“Pamela Walker, I’m Ms. Quinn’s legal attorney,” she said calmly. “My client is filing charges against you for child abandonment and child trafficking. You won’t be leaving. Please remain here.”

Pamela’s eyes went wide with fury.

She watched Zoey walk away with grace, hand in hand with the small, thin girl she had abused for 16 years.

Her mind drifted back to the past, back to the maternity ward.

She had been admitted only a few days when Zoey arrived as well.

Zoey was heavily pregnant, but she was still beautiful. Aside from her belly, her limbs were slim. She stayed in a private VIP room. Her husband was handsome and gentle.

There were caregivers attending her daily, and no matter how busy he was, her husband always made time to stay with her.

At first, Pamela felt nothing. Then one day, in the hallway, she accidentally bumped into Daniel.

He asked kindly if she was hurt, apologized, and helped her to the nurse’s station.
