The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 121

He was already at the door when he stopped and looked back at her. Something in his eyes was dark and impossible to read. Without a word, he reached up, tugged at his collar to undo a button, and walked right back in.

Risk prickled at the base of Nathalie's neck and she immediately wished she could take her words back. She scrambled up from the bed. “Don’t even think about it. I have work, you know!”

The panic on her face must have amused Lance, because something almost playful flickered in his eyes.

In a voice as cool as ever, he said, “Don’t say stuff like that again.” He sounded calm, but the meaning wasn’t lost on her. “Otherwise, I really don’t mind showing you just how far I can take this.”

Well, at least he didn’t need any medication anymore.

Nathalie bit down on her lip, pushing her feelings down hard as she watched him go. She slumped back onto the edge of the bed. Her long lashes fell heavy over her eyes, hiding the mix of sadness and loneliness behind them.

No matter what proof he’d shown her, she still couldn’t bring herself to trust anything he said last night.

Now, because of him, she was stuck. No chance of getting a divorce, not anytime soon.

Thinking about it just made her feel even more tired.

At that moment, her phone started to ring. Nathalie glanced at the screen. Daniel was calling.

“Yeah?” she answered, her tone frosty.

“Come to the hospital,” he said.

“For what? What do you want?” Her voice turned even colder.

“Nathalie, I’m your father. Is that really how you talk to me? Can’t I call you if I want? Your mother is still in the hospital. Didn’t you once consider coming to visit her?” Daniel only lasted a few seconds before his patience snapped and anger leaked through.

Nathalie tightened her grip on the phone. “Don’t you already have your precious daughter, Felice James? Does it even matter whether I come or not?”

“You ungrateful brat!” Daniel was so mad she could almost hear him smashing things in the background. “Get over here now! If you don’t, I’ll give your shares to Felice too!”

And then the call ended. He didn’t even wait for her to respond.

Nathalie sat there for a second, caught off guard by what he’d said.

Shares?

What shares?

Was he actually planning to give her some?!

Still, the whole thing left a sour taste in her mouth.

Honestly, she didn’t want Felice to get anything—not even a penny.

Daniel turned to Felice, and his voice softened. “Felice, sign yours, too.”

Felice didn’t reach for the contract. She just smiled, shaking her head. “Dad, business isn’t really my thing. Even if you give me shares, I wouldn’t know what to do with them. Besides, you and Mom have already been so good to me. That’s more than enough.”

Both Daniel and Camilla looked at her, surprised.

Yesterday she hadn’t said no. Why refuse now?

They both thought the same thing.

Lance.

After all, Felice and Lance had left together yesterday.

Maybe he’d said something to her.
