Daniel and Camilla traded a quick glance, something complicated flickering between them.
“Felice, this really isn’t a big deal,” Daniel said gently. “You joined our family, and we’re supposed to take care of you. Don’t worry about all those thoughts running through your head. You don’t need to know anything about business, I can always bring someone in to manage for you. Just sign it.”
Camilla stepped in, her voice soft. “He’s right, honey. Jasper is getting bigger every day, you can’t stay by his side forever. You need to live your own life too, and this will give you a little backup if you ever need it.”
Felice felt a warm ache in her chest. “Dad, Mom, you’re both so good to me.”
She wiped at her eyes and tried to smile. “But really, you don’t have to. I’m already grateful for everything I have. I don’t want to bring you any trouble, so please, don’t push. I really can’t sign.”
Camilla squeezed Felice’s hand, her eyes shining with love. “You’re too sweet, Felice. It makes my heart hurt.”
Daniel nodded in agreement. “If only you were our real daughter.”
From across the room, Nathalie burst out with a dry laugh.
“Give me a break. How fake can you get?”
She spun on her heel and left without another word.
Daniel’s brows knit together. “That girl is impossible.”
Camilla let out a quiet sigh. “Felice, Nathalie is just spoiled. If she ever does anything to give you a hard time, I apologize for her, okay? Please don’t take it to heart.”
Felice lowered her gaze. “I’m not mad. She’s still my sister.”
Camilla gave a relieved little smile. “You’re such a good kid.”
…
Nathalie let out a long sigh. “He thinks I lied to him, so he’s refusing to sign any divorce papers.”
“What? What happened this time?” Damaris pressed.
Nathalie explained about the earthquake and how she’d pulled him out.
Once she finished, Damaris let out a string of curses. “Seriously? That woman manages to show up at literally every turn. Is she obsessed with making your life hell? Is that the only way she gets her kicks?”
Nathalie stared at her lap. “Lance found proof that she was telling the truth.”
Damaris didn’t miss a beat. “Then we’ll hunt for our own proof. Tons of people were around that day, right? Someone must have seen what you did. We’ll find witnesses and let your ex decide who to trust.”
Nathalie hesitated. “Do you really think we can find anyone?”
