“So this is it? You just brush off my feelings, act like everything I say doesn’t matter, and expect me to forgive you every time, no matter how badly you screw up?” Nathalie’s stare never wavered.
Lance froze, trying to find the right words. “Nathalie, that’s not what I meant.”
“It’s exactly what you do.” She gave him a half-smile, but it was full of hurt and regret. “I used to care about you so much. I lied to myself for years, convinced myself this could work. But that’s over now. I don’t care anymore. I don’t want you anymore. You can try to use every trick in the book to keep me from divorcing you, but as long as I’m alive, I won’t stop fighting for it.”
She pulled her hand from his and walked out of the coffee shop without looking back.
Lance watched her leave, his jaw tight and brow furrowed.
Suddenly his phone rang. The call was from one of the maids at Lumina Grand.
“Mr. Lance, Jasper’s asking to see you. He’s quite upset.”
“I’ll be there soon,” Lance said quickly.
Jasper had a rough night. After being frightened, he’d started running a fever that didn’t let up until morning, and Lance had stayed up with him the whole time.
When he got home, he found Felice waiting outside the gate, curled up with her eyes cast down.
He frowned, voice softer than usual. “Felice, what are you doing here?”
Felice lifted her gaze, face pale and drawn. “Lance, I need to see my son. You have no right to take him away from me.”
Lance kept his tone even. “I’m not trying to take him away, but it’s obvious you can’t look after him properly.”
“I can! Last night was an accident, I swear.” Tears streamed down Felice’s face. “Please, trust me. I promise, I’ll take care of him. Don’t take him from me.”
Lance just shook his head, barely listening. Jasper’s safety had come first, and Felice’s mistakes were piling up. His patience was almost gone.
“Lance!” Felice called after him, voice trembling as she watched him walk away.
She bit her lip, pulled herself to her feet, and stumbled away, heading straight for the Adams Estate.
…
Jasper wasn’t convinced. “Really?”
Lance nodded. “Really. Will you come?”
Jasper thought about it, then nodded too. “Okay.”
He hadn’t asked for his mother once since waking up.
Lance took a deep breath, signaled the maid to help get Jasper dressed, and then they left Lumina Grand together.
After work, Nathalie found Gavin and smiled. “Hey, are you free tonight? Let me buy you dinner.”
Gavin smirked. “What’s this? Trying to buy me off already? One meal’s not enough, just so you know.”
Nathalie laughed, shaking her head. “I just wanted to thank you for last night. You even got hurt helping me, and I feel bad about that. Since you’re new around here, let me introduce you to our best local food.”
