The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 149

Gavin didn’t hesitate, just grinned and said, “Alright then, I’ll gladly accept.”

Nathalie was behind the wheel, bringing him straight to one of her favorite restaurants. As soon as they sat down, she ordered all the house specialties, then glanced at Gavin. “Anything else you want to try?”

He shook his head with a smile. “I think that’s plenty for now. I’ll be living around here for a while, so I can take my time with the menu.”

“Sounds good.” Nathalie nodded and let the waiter know they were set.

She turned back to Gavin. “Weren't you about to tell me something about Felice last night?”

Things had gotten sidetracked before he could bring it up. Honestly, dinner tonight was half about figuring out what was going on with Felice.

Gavin explained, “She said she wanted to quit. Are you two related? I just wanted to know if you had any idea why she’d suddenly want to leave.”

Nathalie raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. After all that effort Felice put into getting close just to be a pain, now she wanted to resign? That was hard to believe.

“We’re not close,” Nathalie replied, straightforward as ever.

Gavin nodded slowly, “Alright then. I thought maybe you’d know something.”

Nathalie took a sip of water, feeling a little scattered inside.

There was a pause, then Gavin spoke again. “I actually have a question too, but you don't have to answer if you don't want.” He was a little hesitant, curious but careful. “You and that guy, Lance… What exactly is going on there?”

He’d run into Lance earlier today and of course recognized him from the night before, the guy who’d shown up out of nowhere and left with Nathalie. The way they acted, it was obviously more complicated than it looked.

Nathalie answered easily, “He’s my about-to-die husband.”

Gavin looked stunned and let out a low whistle. He glanced at her with new sympathy. “He’s… really sick?”

“Yeah. Terminal.” Nathalie nodded, keeping a totally straight face, like she could barely wait for Lance to kick the bucket. It would make things so much easier.

That didn’t last long.

“Nathalie?”

A small, nervous voice piped up, quiet but determined.

Nathalie’s fingers clenched tighter around her chopsticks. She really didn’t want to deal with this. She almost pretended she hadn’t heard.

But the next thing she knew, the man had brought the child right over to their table and sat down beside her.

“Jasper’s just saying hello. If you keep ignoring him like that, it’s only going to make him even more scared of you,” Lance said, sounding tired and a bit frustrated.

Nathalie set her chopsticks down, turned to look at him, and asked, “Were you following me?”
