The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 155

“Nathalie, I haven’t slept properly in more than a day,” Lance said, his voice heavy with exhaustion.

“Too bad you didn’t just drop dead,” Nathalie snapped back, her words sharp and cold. His arms, rigid like steel, kept her locked in place. She tried to wriggle free, but all she managed was to tire herself out, her breath coming in short, angry bursts.

Lance didn’t react at all. He just held her closer, like having her in his arms made everything else fade away and brought him peace.

His warm breath tickled her ear. Nathalie looked away and finally stopped fighting, deciding to save her energy instead.

He really was exhausted. Soon enough, his breathing slowed and became deep and steady.

His grip on her loosened. Nathalie pressed her lips together, something complicated flickering in her eyes.

Slowly, she slipped his arm off her and slid out of bed. After a quick glance back, she left the bedroom and closed the door behind her.

Once she was out, she grabbed her phone and called Maggie.

“Nathalie?” Maggie’s voice came through, puzzled. “It’s really late. What’s going on?”

Nathalie kept her voice cool and distant. “I’m sending you an address. Come over and take care of Lance.”

She hung up before Maggie could say anything else.

The chance was there. Whether Maggie could grab it was up to her.

About an hour later, Maggie stepped out of the elevator and nearly froze when she saw the apartment door hanging open. Her palms felt sweaty as she pushed it open and stepped inside. The place was quiet. Only the bedroom door was closed.

She tiptoed over and cracked it open carefully. There was Lance, lying on his side, fast asleep.

A flash of nervous excitement ran across Maggie’s face, but she didn’t move forward. Not yet. It wasn’t the right moment.

She could wait.

Lance slept deeply that night, surrounded by traces of Nathalie’s scent on the sheets.

He woke up the next morning. The bedroom was empty. Nathalie was gone.

He draped his arm over his eyes and let out a quiet sigh.

She must’ve left as soon as he fell asleep last night. Probably went to sleep in the guest room.

Aaron’s eyebrows jumped. He decided to keep his questions to himself.

He pulled himself together, knocked on the bedroom door, and went inside.

A few minutes later, he reappeared. “Lance wants to see you.”

Maggie dropped her gaze and stepped inside.

Lance was fully dressed now, but his face had gone stone cold, his eyes sharp with barely hidden anger. “Why are you here?”

Maggie repeated what she’d told Aaron, her voice small.

Lance gave a bitter little laugh.

Nathalie sent someone over? What was she thinking?

He tried calling Nathalie, but her phone went straight to voicemail. That only made him clench his phone tighter. He looked at Aaron.

“Find Nathalie. Now.”
