The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 156

Nathalie showed up at Damaris’s place late last night.

Damaris was gaming, controller in one hand, when she answered the door. She shot Nathalie a glance, eyes flicking right back to her phone. “Why’re you here so late?”

Nathalie stepped inside like she belonged. “I missed you, that’s why.”

Damaris didn’t miss a beat. Her eyes stayed on her game, but she puckered up and blew Nathalie a kiss. “Love you, Nathalie, love you.”

Nathalie just stared. Was Damaris always this casual about everything?

Damaris lived alone, and it showed. Game merch was everywhere. The shelves and floor were full of figurines, stacks of discs, and a huge, ridiculously detailed model of some game character in the corner. You could tell gaming wasn’t a hobby to her, it was basically a lifestyle.

Nathalie grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and sank into the couch, waiting for Damaris to finish her match.

A string of curses later, Damaris finally put her phone down and joined her on the sofa. “So, what’s really going on?”

Nathalie took a breath. “Lance insisted on crashing at my place. I didn’t want to see him, so I left.”

Damaris made a face. “Seriously? Isn’t Felice enough for him? Why can’t he just leave you alone?”

Nathalie smirked. “You should go ask him next time you see him.”

Damaris waved that off. “No thanks. If I see him, I’m pretty sure I’d slap him. And let’s be real, he’d ruin me in a fight, so why even bother?”

Nathalie fell quiet.

Damaris changed the subject, her face getting a little more serious. “Actually, if you hadn’t shown up, I was gonna come find you tomorrow anyway. Remember the earthquake thing? The guy I sent out reported back. No one says they saw you save anyone.”
