Lance’s cold stare landed right on Damaris, piercing straight through her. Suddenly, the air in the room felt heavy and sharp, making her shrink back without even thinking about it. The baseball bat in her hands suddenly felt slippery, like she might drop it.
“Did you put her up to this?”
Lance couldn’t help but remember how Nathalie and Damaris were always together, always whispering and plotting. Who knew what wild ideas those two cooked up when they teamed up? This wasn’t even the first time it happened.
Once, he’d come back from a trip and found Nathalie waiting for him with a riding crop, tapping it gently against her palm. She’d ordered him to take off his clothes. Said she wanted to check if any other woman had left a mark on him.
That night, he made sure to leave all kinds of marks on her instead, with the crop forgotten under the bed by the time they were done.
While she was sleeping, her phone buzzed—Damaris again.
Damaris: [Nathalie, was it fun? Did he kneel? Did he beg for mercy?]
Just thinking about that still made Lance scowl. That whole game had been Damaris’s idea, he just knew it. Did they think he was some kind of pet?
So when he saw Damaris now, all he could think was that she’d come up with some other terrible scheme to help Nathalie get a divorce. There was no way Nathalie would come up with the idea of sending another woman to tempt him. That had Damaris written all over it.
“Don’t just go around blaming people!” Nathalie spoke up, her voice steady but firm. “She had nothing to do with it. It was my idea.”
Lance looked at her again. Even now, her eyes were bright with anger. Her breathing was uneven. He kept her pinned on the sofa, her hair messy and her cheeks flushed in a way that only made her look more beautiful.
He swallowed hard, his voice dropping even lower. “So you really thought that sending some woman to me would make me agree to a divorce?”
Nathalie’s eyelashes fluttered, barely able to meet his eyes.
Lance leaned in closer, his breath hot against her ear. Every word hit her where it hurt most.
“Even if I sleep with another woman, Nathalie, I still won’t divorce you. Give up on that idea.”
