“You look gorgeous tonight, Nathalie.” Lance’s arm settled on her shoulders while she walked beside him, her slim figure nearly swallowed by his oversized jacket. The way the red dress hugged her, he couldn’t help but stare.
Nathalie’s face stayed perfectly neutral as she walked ahead. The second she got into the car, she shrugged off the jacket and tossed it out the door.
Lance watched her for a moment, then reached down, picked it up, and said, “Not a fan of this suit, huh? Guess I won’t wear it anymore.” He tossed it straight into a trash can without a second thought.
She shot him a look. “Actually, I don’t like you either. Would you mind just disappearing from my life?”
“Come on, don’t talk nonsense.” Lance only smiled, acting like she hadn’t just kicked his ego to the curb.
He told the driver to start moving. Then he reached over, trying to take her hand.
Nathalie pulled away and started tapping away on her phone, launching a game to avoid any more of his attention.
Lance’s expression turned darker. The car rolled on for a while before he spoke up again. “Stay away from Freddy. Don’t let his sweet act fool you.”
Nathalie didn’t even react. She kept her eyes glued to her screen like she hadn’t heard a word.
“Nathalie.” His voice was rougher now, his patience thinning.
At that, she finally glanced at him. “You’re no saint yourself, are you?”
That hit him harder than he let on. Her icy glare cut right through him and left his chest tight with something he couldn’t name.
“I’m not out to hurt you. He’s not as harmless as everyone thinks,” Lance said seriously.
Nathalie just kept playing her game, choosing not to bother with another reply.
The car filled with a heavy silence, the tension almost suffocating. Even the driver sat straighter in his seat, doing his best to make himself invisible.
Soon enough, they pulled up outside her apartment building.
Nathalie stepped out right away, never once looking back as she headed inside.
Lance stayed put. After a moment, he pulled out his phone and called Aaron. “Keep tabs on The Charles Group. Let me know if they make contact with my wife.”
Nathalie flopped onto her bed. “Let’s just hope the deal with The Charles Group works out smoothly. If that happens, then I’ll really feel proud.”
“It will, for sure,” Damaris said. “From what you’ve told me, Freddy seems like the kind of guy who never forgets a kind gesture. Trust me, he’ll have your back.”
“Fingers crossed,” Nathalie mumbled, barely stifling a yawn. “Damaris, I’m wiped out. I need to sleep.”
“Alright, get some rest. Sweet dreams.”
Damaris hung up, leaving the room peacefully quiet.
That night, Nathalie slept better than she had in ages. The next morning, she woke up feeling fully recharged and ready to take on the day.
The minute she stepped into the office, she spotted Felice, who looked like she hadn’t slept all night. The dark circles under her eyes were impossible to miss.
That sight only made Nathalie’s morning a little bit brighter.
