The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 184

The Charles Group.

Freddy was sunk into a seriously expensive leather chair, scribbling his signature one last time across a stack of documents. Someone knocked on the office door.

He glanced up. “Come in.”

Garrison stepped inside, his face tight with concern. “Freddy, I can’t get in touch with Nathalie. I did some checking. She’s at a police station.”

Freddy’s light brown eyes narrowed just a bit behind his rimless glasses. Confusion crept into his expression. “What happened?”

Garrison’s brows knotted. “Apparently, she pushed Felice down a staircase.”

He hesitated for a moment, the mood getting heavier. “She’s really unpredictable, Freddy. Are you sure we should work with her?”

Freddy’s fingers paused on the document. “I’ve only met her the one time, but I don’t buy that story. Do you know which station she’s at?”

Garrison blinked in surprise. “Wait, you want to go see her?”

“Yeah,” Freddy said. “There’s got to be some misunderstanding. If I can, I want to help her out. I owe her my life, you know.”

Garrison’s expression was complicated, but he went to find the details.

Night settled in.

Nathalie sat on a stiff wooden cot in a cramped cell, iron bars cutting her off from the rest of the world. Her face looked washed out, her gaze distant and blank.

An officer stopped outside her cell. “You have a visitor.”

Nathalie’s eyelashes fluttered, but she squeezed her eyes shut. “No one I want to see.”

“Ms. Blair.”

He’d already heard rumors. The Blair Family always favored their adopted daughter.

He set the folder down, flashing a gentle smile. “I respect whatever you decide. It’s your choice.”

Nathalie stared at him, lost. “Why?”

Freddy tilted his head. “Why what?”

She glanced down, fingers twisting tighter. “I’m in a police cell. I’m not good partnership material. Why would you come here with a contract?”

And you even came in person.

Freddy smiled more, his eyes softening. He looked at her closely. “I can’t believe someone who risks everything to save a stranger would hurt someone on purpose. That’s not who you are.”

He reached up, adjusting his glasses slightly. “Even from the little time I’ve spent with you, I know you’re a good person, Nathalie.”
