“You don’t have to worry about it, Freddy. My wife and I already have dinner plans.”
Lance stared at Freddy, his eyes cold and sharp. You could almost feel the chill filling the air.
Freddy just raised his eyebrows, then turned to Nathalie. “Ms. Blair, what about you? Is there a choice you’d like to make?”
Damaris squeezed Nathalie’s hand, hoping she’d pick Freddy instead.
Lance watched her too, his gaze a little guarded, his throat moving as he swallowed. For once, he wasn’t sure how things would play out. In the past, he had always been her first pick. Now, he couldn’t be so certain.
Nathalie dropped her eyes, her lashes trembling a little. She thought for maybe two seconds, then turned to Freddy. “Thank you, Freddy.”
She took Damaris’s hand and walked toward Freddy’s car. Freddy’s smile was subtle as he walked beside them.
“Nathalie!”
Lance’s voice came from behind, quiet but impossible to ignore.
She straightened her back but never glanced back. Instead, she got straight into Freddy’s car.
Damaris immediately breathed out, finally letting herself relax as the car door closed.
Freddy glanced at her with concern. “Ms. Blair, is there anything you need? Anything I can help with?”
Nathalie paused for a moment, a flicker of hesitation in her expression.
When she met Freddy’s gaze, she saw nothing but honesty in his handsome face and soft brown eyes, as if promising he’d help her with whatever came her way.
Damaris could barely keep still. She was sweating, meeting such an important person today. Her gaze flickered between Nathalie and Freddy, catching herself almost giggling. Maybe her best friend didn’t have to settle, after all—not when there were new possibilities.
That jerk Lance was already yesterday’s news. Nathalie deserved so much better.
Outside, Lance stood rooted in place, watching as the car drove away. His handsome face was getting colder by the second, a storm cloud passing over his expression. People walking by gave him a wide berth, careful not to provoke someone clearly in a mood.
Eventually, he slid into his own car and pulled out his phone. “Aaron, I want you to buy Apex Audio.”
Apex Audio was where Nathalie worked. Aaron didn’t get it, but nodded anyway. “Right away.”
He moved fast, putting together a project team and getting in touch with Apex Audio’s owner. The owner listened in disbelief—The Adams Group wanted to buy their company? Out of nowhere?
Why would they do that?
