“You didn’t find anything?” Nathalie stared in disbelief. “Seriously?”
Damaris ran her fingers through her hair. “I’m stumped too. There’s a file of her getting into the orphanage when she was ten, then she was adopted by your parents at twelve. But before the orphanage? Nothing. It’s totally blank, like someone wiped her whole life away on purpose.”
Nathalie felt her heart sink. Felice’s past had just vanished.
Why would someone erase it?
Was there something shameful? Or just something that needed hiding?
Damaris spoke up again. “I did my best, but this is all I could get.”
“You’ve done amazing already.” Nathalie offered her a gentle smile. “Don’t go digging anymore.”
She didn’t want Damaris to get herself in trouble.
Damaris nodded. She was flopped on her stomach, chin propped on her hand, puzzlement written all over her face. “Who even is Felice? Your parents treat her so well, and now her past is covered up. It’s all kind of mysterious.”
Nathalie lowered her eyes. “I really don’t know.”
If she did, maybe she wouldn’t feel so lost.
Damaris let out a huge yawn. “Feels like we’re totally stuck. Don’t stress too much. The truth will come out sooner or later.”
“I know. You should get some sleep, you sound exhausted.”
“Alright, goodnight, babe.”
“Goodnight.”
Nathalie put her phone down and just sat on the edge of her bed, feeling dazed. Daniel and Camilla must know everything about Felice’s past.
Were they the ones who got rid of all the evidence?
Why would they do that?
She couldn’t wrap her head around it.
And honestly, she was too tired to chase after answers tonight.
She’d already done the DNA test with Camilla, and the results were coming out soon.
“Yeah. I guess it is.”
Nathalie sounded indifferent. “Anything else? I’ve got work to do.”
Lance didn’t let up. “When are you moving back? Tonight? I can pick you up.”
“The house isn’t sold yet. Once it is, I’ll move back.” Nathalie shifted her attention to the stack of scripts in her hand.
Lance’s eyes lingered on her. “Alright. I’ll wait for you.”
Then, almost as an afterthought, he said, “Felice won’t be working here anymore.”
Nathalie shrugged. “Whatever makes you happy.”
If Lance wanted someone gone, they were gone. Who could stand in his way?
He stepped closer. “Why don’t you look happy? I thought you hated her. I’m making sure you don’t have to see her again.”
Nathalie blinked at him, a little surprised. “Wow. Kind of brutal, don’t you think? She’s your sister-in-law. You change sides so fast it’s hard to believe you’re the same guy who stayed by Felice’s side when she had her baby.”
